EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

What does the YA crowd want? Edgy characters, violence,
romance, humor, an escape from homework, siblings, teachers,
and yes, even friends, especially the ones that thrive on drama.
You need quiet time to hang with horrific creatures, to blanch
with fear, to tremble with forbidden desire. You want to be there
when things happen behind closed doors or late at night beneath
a scabrous moon. You want adventure and impossible love.

There is an endless parade of authors, experienced and new,
clambering to get in line to entertain you. In a vast but ordinary
sea, a few have bobbled to the top like so many corks, waiting to
be scooped up.
Legendary screenwriter and author (The Princess Bride),
William Goldman, says this about storytelling - "Give them
what they want, just not the way they expect it".
You want vampires? You got them – just not in the way you
might expect. Gone are the lurching monstrosities of Nosferatu, those melodramatic, bat-shifting
versions of Dracula. Those undead dudes in today’s market would burn in the sun of been-there-
done-that. In Twilight, Stephanie Meyer did it differently - vampires go out during the day. She
created something no girl could resist, a hot romance with a tragic boy-man, so unbearably
gorgeous he actually sparkles.

You want bloody confrontation? You got it! In The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins took the
old idea of gladiator games and made teens battle it out to the death. Back when kids were less
savvy, their innocence guarded by overbearing adults, Katniss would have found a way to avoid
the game or beat it without killing anyone. Not so now. The Hunger Games gives you death and
mayhem, sorrow and glory. It breaks your heart, and you love it.

In the Sookie Stackhouse books, Charlaine Harris got a cool idea. What if vamps could drink
synthetic blood? No longer meat, humans are boyfriends, girlfriends, and business associates.
Fake blood tastes like crap, but that’s okay. Some of these vamps really want to cling to their lost
humanity. Oh how they suffer, surrounded by all those juicy humans. What a conflict!

In The Apocalypse Gene, we follow Goldman's advice. We offer romance and adventure,
characters you can root for, and comedy to break the tension, but we stepped beyond the
conventions and designed new creatures and a twist on paranormal romance. The Apocalypse
Gene meets the classic “genre” criteria for fantasy, but it’s unique, a wild trip to another "world".
It challenges your expectations. Our readers and reviewers describe the book as highly
imaginative. We consider that the highest compliment. We will give you what you want, just not
the way you expect it. Come and imagine . . .
