Mandy was right; moonlight made it easier to see, but the uneasy feeling in my stomach intensified as I moved toward that grouping of headstones. They were crooked and uneven. Like the ground beneath them settled a long time ago but never actually stopped settling.
The damp air made it harder to breathe.
“All right, what do I do with these things?” Derek took one of the L-shaped wires from his sister.
An involuntary shiver crept up my back as I recalled how cold those things were.
“Hold it like this.” Nell held the smaller section of the wire in her hand, letting the larger section point straight out in front of her. “One in each hand.” She gave Derek the other one. “Now, loosen your grip so they’re free to move when they want to, and start walking.”
Derek examined his metal rods. “You’re saying they’ll move on their own?”
“Yep.”
“No way.” Derek shook his head and tried to hand the hanger back.
“You scared?” Nell’s smile was evident in her voice.
“No.”
“Good.” Nell pointed toward the graves. “When you’re over an actual body, you’ll see the two points converge.” She held her arms in front of her as if they were the metal coat hangers. Then she folded them and her fingertips nearly touched. “If one side still sways—” she demonstrated by moving her right hand a little, “—then you’ve most likely hit a female.”
“You can’t possibly tell that.” Mandy’s voice was as breathless as I felt.
Nell simply shrugged. “We’ll let the tombstones tell us afterward.”
Did she have any fears? Was I the only one covered in a chill that seemed to cling to my soul? Maybe Mom’s death had altered me in this area, too. Death wasn’t this far-off elusive thing that I never thought about anymore. Death was real. Always present in my thoughts because of the hole it had left in my heart.
Derek tried to hand his sister the rods. “Maybe you should go first and show us.”
Nell made chicken noises.
Derek shifted his shoulders like he was preparing to shoot a free throw. “I just don’t want to mess up.”
Hunter groaned until Derek started walking. At first, nothing happened. Then, as he walked past the headstone, to the other side, the metal rods twitched toward him.
“Whoa.” He stopped.
Imaginary centipedes raced across my skin.
“Keep going,” Nell whispered.

Submerge (Mer Chronicles #2)
by Tobie Easton

Now that Lia and Clay’s love has broken the Little Mermaid’s curse, everything has changed. Will Lia’s family remain on land, leading the only life she and her sisters have ever known, or will they move below the waves, to the sparkling new capital city? Lia is adamant about staying on land with Clay for her senior year. But at Melusine and her father’s trial, new revelations threaten what Lia holds most dear.

The verdict will shake Lia’s whole world, calling into question her future with Clay, her feelings for Caspian, and the fate of all Merkind. As she wonders who to trust, Lia sets out on a treacherous path that will lead her away from her sheltered Malibu home to a remote and mysterious school for Mermaids—Mermaids who may hold the secret to ancient magic Lia can use to either get back all she’s lost or to embark on a thrilling and dangerous journey.

It’s my last day of normal, and I plan to enjoy it. While my parents are getting caught up at the Foundation, I plan to sit right here, all snuggly on Clay’s couch and not think about what’s coming. Not think about how tonight, more Merfolk from across the ocean floor
will surface here in Malibu. Not think about where I’ll be this time tomorrow.

Nope. All I’m going to think about is Clay and maybe how I can get to know his lips even better. I scoot closer to him on the couch, rest my head on his shoulder, and inhale. He played me one of his new songs on the guitar earlier, and the cinnamon scent of his guitar polish still lingers. He strokes my hair, and this den—his den, with its overstuffed, checkered furniture, humming AC, and glowing television—turns into the most relaxing place in the world. Sitting next to Clay, I can forget for a few minutes that I’m a Mermaid and just be a normal girl.
“Lia, can I … can I see your tail?”
Or not.
I sit up so fast, Clay’s hand gets tangled in my hair. Ow. “You’ve seen my tail plenty of times,” I say as he works his fingers free. It’s true; he’s seen it whenever he comes over and I’m swimming in my pool with my sisters or spending time in the grottos with my parents. But now that we’re alone and there’s no water in sight, deliberately transforming into my tail just so he can look at it feels like putting myself on display.

“I’ve never seen it up close,” he says, twisting his thumb ring around in a circle. He’s right—and that’s on purpose. I’ve been making a point of keeping our alone time as human as possible. We hang out at the pier, walk on the promenade, grab sushi or burgers—y’know, normal stuff. Clay’s a human guy and I just … I don’t want … it’s a lot to take in. What if I scare him off? What if up close, he thinks my tail’s gross, that I’m gross?

Since I haven’t said anything, he pushes on. “Every time I see you with your tail, we’re around your family, and I feel like I shouldn’t stare.” He lets his fingers sweep through his own dark hair, then claps a hand on his denim-clad leg. “It’s just, it’s a part of you. This
beautiful part, and … but if you don’t want to, that’s cool. If it’s weird or whatever … ”

I raise my gaze from my lap. “Did … did you say beautiful?”
The corner of his mouth quirks up. An expression I know well.
“Oh yeah.”
I look down at my lap again, and he rests a hand on my thigh, the heat of his palm warming my skin through the thin jersey of my skirt. “I think you’re beautiful,” he says.
All of me? I want to ask. Even the parts that are more halibut than human?
I love my tail, but it’s always been this secret part of me, the part I have to keep hidden. How will this human boy in front of me—this handsome, patient human boy—react to seeing it up close? I guess there’s only one way I’ll find out.

A simple but forgotten truth: Where harbingers of death appear, the morgues will soon be full.

Angie Dovage can tell there’s more to Reece Fernandez than just the tall, brooding athlete who has her classmates swooning, but she can’t imagine his presence signals a tragedy that will devastate her small town. When something supernatural tries to attack her, Angie is thrown into a battle between good and evil she never saw coming. Right in the center of it is Reece—and he’s not human. What's more, she knows something most don't. That the secrets her town holds could kill them all. But that’s only half as dangerous as falling in love with a harbinger of death.

His soft voice clashes with the intensity of his gaze. “You’re adorable when you’re trying to be mad at me. You needn’t work so hard at it, though. We aren’t meant to be adversaries.”
“I, um…” My thoughts disband, leaving nothing for communication purposes. I’m adorable? Adorable has many definitions. I think my dog is adorable, for example. “That…wasn’t what I was going to ask you.”

He inclines his head. “Okay, then. Ask.”

But that “adorable” echoes through me, clinking around like a penny down a well. “What are we meant to be, then?”

His lips curls up at the corners. “That wasn’t your question, either.”

Darkness can only be controlled by those with the darkest of hearts.

Ellison lost her mother at an early age. Now, sixteen, her father has found love again. He’s happy and doesn’t quite notice that Ellison does not get along with his new wife or her vicious daughters.

When Ellison discovers a necromantic tome while traveling the secret passages of her father’s mansion, she wonders if it could be the key to her eventual freedom.

Until then, she must master her dark new power, even as her stepmother makes her a servant in her own home. And when her younger brother falls incurably ill, Ellison will do anything to ease his pain, including falling prey to her stepmother’s and stepsisters’ every whim and fancy.

Stumbling into a chance meeting with Prince William during a secret visit to her mother’s grave feels like a trick of fate when her stepmother refuses to allow Ellison to attend a palace festival where she might see him once more.

But what if Ellison could see the kind and handsome prince again? What if she could attend the festival? What if she could have everything she’s ever wanted and deserved by conjuring spirits to take revenge on her cruel stepmother? And what if she actually liked watching her stepmother suffer?

As Ellison’s power grows, she loses control over the evil spirits meant to do her bidding. And as they begin to exert their own power over Ellison, it becomes harder to tell whether it is she or her stepmother who is the true monster.

CINDERELLA NECROMANCER is CINDER meets ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD and was inspired by a real medieval grimoire of necromancy from 15th-century Germany
