Waiting on Wednesday #32: Daughter of Deep Silence & Deadfall

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm waiting on...

Daughter of Deep Silence
Hardcover, 384 pages
Expected publication: June 2nd 2015 by Dutton Books for Young Readers
Genre: YA - Contemporary Thriller

In the wake of the deadly devastation of the luxury yacht Persephone, just three souls remain to tell its story—and two of them are lying. Only Frances Mace, rescued from the ocean after torturous days adrift with her dying friend Libby, knows that the Persephone wasn’t sunk by a rogue wave as survivors Senator Wells and his son, Grey, are claiming—it was attacked.

To ensure her safety from the obviously dangerous and very powerful Wells family, Libby’s father helps newly orphaned Frances assume Libby’s identity. After years of careful plotting, she’s ready to expose the truth and set her revenge plans into motion—even if it means taking down the boy she’d once been in love with: Grey Wells himself.

Sharp and incisive, Daughter of Deep Silence by Carrie Ryan is a deliciously smart revenge thriller that examines perceptions of identity, love, and the lengths to which one girl is willing to go when she thinks she has nothing to lose.

It's been a while since Carrie has had a book come out and I am so excited about this one. I meet author last October along with Kami Garcia and I must say both of them were wonderful! :)  I can't wait to read this new one soon!

Hillary's is waiting on....

Deadfall by Anna Carey
Series: Blackbird Duology #2
Number of Pages: 256
Expected publication: June 16th 2015 by Harper Teen
Genre: YA - Mystery/Thriller

In the compelling sequel to Blackbird, Anna Carey delivers a gritty and adrenaline-filled story of a girl desperate to escape her mysterious and terrifying assailants. Told in second person, this heart-pounding thriller puts the reader in front of the target.

A week ago, you woke up in Los Angeles with no memory of who you are. The only thing you knew: people are trying to kill you. You put your trust in Ben, but he betrayed you and broke your heart. Now you've escaped to New York City with a boy named Rafe, who says he remembers you from before. But the two of you are not safe. The same people who are after you are tailing Rafe as well. As the chase heats up, your memory starts to return, but your past cannot save you from the terrifying circumstances of your present, or the fact that one wrong move could end this game forever.

With enemies on every side, and not a reprieve in sight, Deadfall will grab readers and refuse to let go. Perfect for fans of the Maze Runner series and the Legend series.
Note from Hillary:
I still haven’t read Blackbird or any of Anna Carey’s other books, but when I saw the cover for Deadfall, I basically moved the priority of this duology up on my tbr books. I’m impressed with how well both covers complement each other.

What book(s) are YOU waiting on this Wednesday?

Sing For Me by Gracie Madison
Series: Angels and Arias #1
Number of pages: 325-350
Date of Publication: 1/21/2015
Publisher: Tika Lake Publishing LLC
Genre: New Adult > Paranormal Romance

Madeline Noel fled war-torn Heaven to hide within the mortal world, but the blessing that could protect her from evil is the holy realm’s forbidden power.

As a talented soprano for the Eden Theatre Company, Madeline hides among prima donnas and tone-deaf flutists. Her perfect voice may entertain audiences, but a careless laugh may shatter glass, and her greatest scream can kill. To control her unrestrained voice, the angels forbid Madeline from embracing the emotions that strengthen her song. Anger. Fear.

Love.

The demon-hunter Damascus vows to defend Madeline from Hell’s relentless evil, but he cannot protect her from her own feelings. Though they deny their dangerous attraction, her guardian becomes her greatest temptation.

Surrendering to desire may awaken the gift suppressed within Madeline’s soul, and neither Heaven nor Hell will allow such absolute power to exist.

Singing while Veiled was a travesty. Her words might have mumbled, her vocal cords strained, and the warmth of her pitch muffled without the range and complexities she studied in the Realm.
She searched the bar and found him.
Damascus always listened—within the Realm or within a tiny bar with a tinny karaoke machine sputtering a melody.
And, for him, she’d sing forever.
The song blended between their voices, though Madeline’s warm harmony unintentionally overpowered Danielle’s tired lead. Usually, she wove caution within her notes. Prevented the beauty from striking each beat and bursting within the measures.
Usually.
Her gaze strayed to the table. To him.
The blessing of chastity corrupted with a glance to the one listening so intently. The Realm created the Choirs to entertain all, and yet, Madeline meticulously sang each note for one being only. All her songs echoed only for him.
His attention forged a fire that sliced her body and razed every bit of her defenses in consecrated, dangerous heat. No alcohol was that intoxicating or that sensual.
She hummed over the notes, layering each word in sultry meter. An unintentional seduction molded from the very thoughts she fought to hide. The emotion trapped within her voice. Swelled. The feminine growl in her melody suppressed with her weakening resolve.
He’d hear her longing, and she wanted him to understand it.
The bar shifted and sighed. Hands brushed arms. Whispers passed in the shadows. Giggles yielded to hushed promises. Her song led them all. The power of her voice broke the inhibitions of even the sober cast and crew members. In the corner, a couple kissed despite the wedding rings on their fingers. A chorus girl hopped onto the bar while another woman embraced her.
A cool shudder teased her flesh with the prickle of forbidden goose bumps. Her voice wavered, but not from weakness. The secret delight caressed the music from her lips and presented the song to him like a soft kiss. The shadows of the room concealed what she could not. The heat touched her brow, and she flushed a damning pink.
It was time to stop. Before everyone in the pub abandoned modesty and gave into the one passion she created in them but never experienced for herself.
The music resonated within her, but she couldn’t steal her gaze from Damascus. Every moment only teased her with the promise of his song, the cadence of his breath, and the drumming of his need.
The song crescendoed.
Her body ached to feel the same.
But the music crackled and sizzled into silence. Madeline’s music lost in a shuddering gasp.
The song affected more than the mortals edging close to one and other, holding hands. Leaning into the shadows. Whispering. Touching.
Damascus’s steps thudded the very earth beneath his feet.  The heat flared from his body. Or maybe her own. Music had never dizzied her so much.
He moved, drawn by the promise of the melody. A thrill cascaded through her, sobering and affirming all at once.
The warrior submitted to the maiden.

Release Day Blitz: THE RETURN by Jennifer L. Armentrout Book Teaser + Giveaway: win a $250 Amazon GC!

The Return Release Week Blitz banner
Hi everyone!
We have been dying to bring you the Release Blitz for Jennifer L. Armentrout's THE RETURN! THE RETURN is a New Adult Paranormal Romance and is a part of Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Titan Series. Seth is looking to be just as dangerously delicious as we all hoped!!

The Return - Cover

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…

It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

Book 1 in the new adult paranormal TITAN series, spin-off to the best selling COVENANT series.

I was a half-blood, but I was also the Apollyon, a child of a pure and a half, a union that had been forbidden for thousands of years because an Apollyon was more powerful than any pure or half could ever hope to be.
And I always got to the traitors’ hideouts before they did, so the Sentinels were usually left with the cleanup, which I was sure absolutely thrilled them.
The first to enter was a female half-blood dressed just as I was. Her black hair was pulled back in a neat little knot at the top of her head. She was older, probably in her mid-thirties. It was pretty rare for a Sentinel to live that long. Her dark skin paled as she stopped just inside the entrance. She clenched titanium daggers in her hands like she expected something vicious to pop out from under the bloody mess.
The female Sentinel tipped her chin up, and the overhead light sliced across her broad cheekbones. She bore a jagged scar under her right eye, the skin lighter in tone. She saw me and froze.
My smile widened.
Behind her, another Sentinel rushed in, almost mowing her over. He saw me and whispered, “Seth.”
He’d said my name like I was the monster under his bed, and I sort of liked that. Then another Sentinel and another rolled in. The fifth took one look at my interior design work and keeled over. Slamming his hands on his knees, he hurled up his dinner.
Nice.
Our society existed completely unknown to the average mortal and had operated under what was known as the Breed Order for thousands of years. The Order had been dismantled, which meant halfs were no longer forced to choose between becoming Sentinels—hunting down violent creatures, protecting pures, enforcing laws, and otherwise usually dying pretty damn quickly on the job—or servants, which was a job that really wasn’t a job, but more like slavery. Since then, many pampered pures had signed on to be Sentinels, making up for the loss of the halfs who’d pretty much said “screw this shit, I’m out.”
This wasn’t necessarily a good thing.
For example, the dumbass puking all over my blood-covered floor was a pure. When he straightened, his face a greenish hue, he backed away, shaking his head. “I can’t,” he gasped out. “I can’t do this.”
Then he turned and hauled ass out the doors.
I sighed. This was why we couldn’t have nice things.

Thank you Ryan Graudin for agreeing to be interviewed on my blog! :)

  1. Sad ending or happy ending?

I’m a sucker for happy endings, but I do think it’s important that they be believable. And/or realistic. Different stories also demand different endings. I’m a big proponent of hope, and try to infuse it in any ending I write, whether happy or sad.

  1. Laptop or Desktop?

I prefer laptops because I like switching up my surroundings on occasion. I find my creativity can be sparked by just getting out of the house. Or even escaping my office. Working from home means I get cabin fever. Laptops make it possible to treat this very serious ailment. And get out in the sunlight. And see people.

  1. Long chapters or Short chapters?

Mine usually end up being medium length. Around 8 or 9 pages. Though I do sometimes enjoy throwing a few punchy, short chapters in there. For dramatic effect and all.

  1. Urban Fantasy or Dystopian?

One of the very first manuscripts I worked on (which is now mercifully shelved) was an Urban Fantasy. I had a soft spot for them. Though, as a reader, I usually don’t care what genre it is if the story is crafted well enough.

  1. Movies or TV?

Over the years I’ve become much more of a TV watcher instead of movies. Doctor Who, LOST, Firefly and BBC Sherlock are among my all time favorites. Any Marvel movie that hits the theatres is an automatic must see for me, and I’m very excited for all of the superhero television shows that are emerging!

  1. Coffee or Hot Cocoa?

Give me that caffeine. I drink lots of coffee. Two or three cups black in the mornings. When I want to lay off the caffeine but still want a hot drink I resort to herbal tea. Hot Cocoa is more of a rare treat.

  1. Facebook or Twitter?

I’m more partial to Twitter nowadays, but the two social media sites play two different roles for me. I’ve had a Facebook since college, and use it on a much more personal note. Twitter is where I engage with readers and other writers. I love the bookish community!!!

  1. Bookish Superpower: Speed Reading or Speed Writing?

I would love to speed write. There’s so many stories I want to tell! I’m told I’m a relatively fast writer, but I don’t feel that way when I’m only churning out 1000 words a day.

  1. Pink or Blue?

In most cases blue. Though I’m always in awe of Laini Taylor’s hot pink hair. (I’ve tried purple myself! I don’t know if I have the cajones to pull off the pink!)

  1. Print books or ebooks?

Print books. Always and forever.

Waiting on Wednesday #31: Nowhere But Here & Hello, I Love You

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm waiting on...

Nowhere But Here by Katie McGarry
Hardcover, 496 pages
Expected publication: May 26th 2015 by Harlequin Teen
Genre: YA - Contemporary Romance

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible.

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

Guys, I am SOOOO excited about this one. Another book from Katie McGarry!!!!!

Hillary's is waiting on....

Hello, I Love You by Katie M. Stout
Number of Pages: 304
Expected publication: June 9th 2015 by St. Martin's Griffin
Genre: YA - Contemporary Romance

A teen escapes to a boarding school abroad and falls for a Korean pop star in this fun and fresh romantic novel in the vein of Anna and the French Kiss.

Grace Wilde is running—from the multi-million dollar mansion her record producer father bought, the famous older brother who’s topped the country music charts five years in a row, and the mother who blames her for her brother’s breakdown. Grace escapes to the farthest place from home she can think of, a boarding school in Korea, hoping for a fresh start.

She wants nothing to do with music, but when her roommate Sophie’s twin brother Jason turns out to be the newest Korean pop music superstar, Grace is thrust back into the world of fame. She can't stand Jason, whose celebrity status is only outmatched by his oversized ego, but they form a tenuous alliance for the sake of her friendship with Sophie. As the months go by and Grace adjusts to her new life in Korea, even she can't deny the sparks flying between her and the KPOP idol.

Soon, Grace realizes that her feelings for Jason threaten her promise to herself that she'll leave behind the music industry that destroyed her family. But can Grace ignore her attraction to Jason and her undeniable pull of the music she was born to write? Sweet, fun, and romantic, this young adult novel explores what it means to experience first love and discover who you really are in the process.
Note from Hillary:
In an interview I did recently for Beckie, I kind of admitted my love obsession for all things Kpop. When I heard about this book and how it has to do with Kpop, I almost yelled in surprise and happiness. I’m super excited to read this book and you can definitely count on me buying this as soon as it’s released in June. I’m seriously waiting and tapping my fingers…
