Book Review: Take a Bow by Elizabeth Eulberg

Title: Take a Bow
Author: Elizabeth Eulberg
Number of Pages: 278
Published: April 1st 2012 by Point
Source: Library
Genre: Contemporary
Reading Level: YA
Star Rating: ★★★★★
Emme, Sophie, Ethan, and Carter are seniors at a performing arts school, getting ready for their Senior Showcase recital, where the pressure is on to appeal to colleges, dance academies, and professionals in show business. For Sophie, a singer, it's been great to be friends with Emme, who composes songs for her, and to date Carter, soap opera heartthrob who gets plenty of press coverage. Emme and Ethan have been in a band together through all four years of school, but wonder if they could be more than just friends and bandmates. Carter has been acting since he was a baby, and isn't sure how to admit that he'd rather paint than perform. The Senior Showcase is going to make or break each of the four, in a funny, touching, spectacular finale that only Elizabeth Eulberg could perform.

Young adult Contemporary novels are huge right now and I myself have developed a love for this genre of books. Take a Bow is a prime example of why I love contemporary. I feel in love with the book right from the beginning. The story is told from 4 different points of view and while I have not been a big fan of these types of books; Take a Bow was just perfect to a tee. The author did a wonderful job with melding the four character's stories together. Sophie, Emme, Ethan, and Carter each had there own unique and enriching tale to tell. I found myself wanting to keep reading more and more so I may find out what happen next.

Emme is a songwriter and writes many songs for her best friend Sophie to sing. She is too shy and scared to be up in the spotlight for herself.

Sophie wants nothing more than to be a STAR with a capital S! She will do anything to climb to the top even if that means using her BFF Emme in the process.

Ethan is part of a band called Teenage Kicks and his teammates are Emme, Jack, and Ben.  He also is a songwriter and singer.  Ethan's one flaw is not speaking what he feels in his heart.

Carter is a child star and best known for his role is the movie Kavalier Kids. He is currently dating Sophie and is keeping a secret. He loves art and painting.

They are have one thing is common. They go to an elite school called New York High School for the Creative and Preforming Arts. Each on them are on a separate journey to find their way in the world.

Take a Bow is full of physical and emotional trials and tribulations. I love that each character grew and learned from events that took pace in the story. They helped each other to find happiness, to take chances and even stand up for what they believe in. Elizabeth's writing is smooth, and rich with emotion. I dare say take a bow was one of the best young adult contemporary I have read this year. This is my first book read by the author and I will be definitely read all of her work.

A 5 ★★★★★ masterpiece, Take a Bow is in a spotlight of it's own!

Book Review: Family Matters by Kathleen McKenna

Title: Family Matters
Author: Kathleen McKenna
Number of Pages: 306
Published: Published May 5, 2012

Genre: Crime > Horror
Reading Level: Adult
Star Rating: ★★★

Charles Manson and Susan Atkins ... Can the living haunt the living? Although a fiction, 'Family Matters' is based on a series of actual interviews that took place between Susan Atkins and the author, Kathleen McKenna, during which some seriously eerie and disturbing incidents occurred, and on correspondence with Charles Manson whose first e-mail opened with, 'You are a f … ing idiot if you think I am the most dangerous man alive and Dick Cheney has been your Vice-President for 8 years.” While Ms. McKenna found Charles Manson 'unknowable and frightening', yet also charismatic, charming and witty, Susan Atkins, whom she met face-to-face on several occasions, came across as so terrifying as to suggest being in the presence of evil incarnate, with the apparent power to harness unnerving supernatural forces … and Ms. McKenna has worked alongside a Homicide Division for 21 years and has routinely encountered the most violent of murderers. The story … When Izzy Stanley, an ambitious TV broadcaster, hears that Susan Atkins has petitioned to be released from prison to be allowed to die peacefully at home, she cannot resist making the wise-crack on air that Susan Atkins' petition is only fair as she herself helped Sharon Tate to die peacefully at home in her turn. Her impromptu remark inevitably provokes a tumultuous response, and prompts Susan Atkins herself to demand to see her to explain her perspective now that she has found God, which seems like the journalistic coup of the century. Even better, Izzy suddenly realizes that she herself bears an uncanny resemblance to Susan Atkins' victim, Sharon Tate, a stroke of luck she fully intends to exploit to the full. Then she starts having dreams in which she is Sharon Tate on that fateful night. The thing is, though, they don't really feel like dreams ….

My Review: I have previously worked with author, Kathleen McKenna and loved her first novel The Wedding Gift. So I am so super excited when I heard she about Family Matters. I am sure that most of you know the stories of The Manson Family and the brutal killing involved. Family Matters is written surrounding the stories of Charles Manson and Susan Atkins. While the book is purely fictions some events and people are real. With that said, on with the review...

First things first, this book scared the bejesus out of me. From the first page I was sucked into the story and into Izzys world. Izzy is a TV broadcaster, married to the man of her dreams, Ethan and loves her work but wishes to move up into her field. When she does a news piece about Susan Atkins and puts her own twist at the end of her broadcast she never thought it would lead to Susan herself to request a personal interview with her. Izzy is less than thrilled but agrees to do it in hopes that will boost her career. Wow, was she ever more wrong because right away Susan and Izzy did not get along. So after as discourteous and creepy interview, Izzy is left angry, threatened and yes, scared shi*less. Little does she know things are about to get really, REALLY bad. Izzy begins to sense a presents around her and objects begin to move around by themselves...she also hears the taunting voice of Susan Atkins. No one believes what she has heard and seen, not even her husband. Ethan seems to only care about pushing Izzy to bear a child for him. So when she does get pregnant that is when things really start to turn horrifying....but to find out what happes you will have to read, Family Matters for yourself.

I must say I really enjoyed the book, the characters where quite engaging. I loved Izzys personality and how she dealt with being so scared. She is definitely a kick-ass gal and was always true to herself. I didn't want to put the book down. The plot was brilliantly composed and entertaining. Kathleen really knows her Mansons and has no problems portraying Susan and Charles perfectly. The book had such a real factor, and I think that's what makes it so scary. While I myself have never read all that much about the details surrounding the The Manson Family murders, this book was a real eye opener and really does seem to take the reader into their world.
Final Thought: So just remember one thing.... "When you visit Susan Atkins and Charles Manson...Know ONE thing. They are going to visit you back!"

Book Review: Revived by Cat Patrick

Title: Revived
Author: Cat Patrick
Number of Pages: 336
Published: May 8th 2012 by Little, Brown Books
Source: Library
Genre: Sci-Fi
Reading Level: YA
Star Rating: ★★★★★

As a little girl, Daisy Appleby was killed in a school bus crash. Moments after the accident, she was brought back to life.
A secret government agency has developed a drug called Revive that can bring people back from the dead, and Daisy Appleby, a test subject, has been Revived five times in fifteen years. Daisy takes extraordinary risks, knowing that she can beat death, but each new death also means a new name, a new city, and a new life. When she meets Matt McKean, Daisy begins to question the moral implications of Revive, and as she discovers the agency’s true goals, she realizes she’s at the center of something much larger—and more sinister—than she ever imagined.

First Impressions:  I was super excited when I first saw that Cat Patrick had put out another novel. I just adored Forgotten when I read it last year and feel in love with the authors writing style and how the stories she creates just suck you in and wont let you stop reading until the very end. So once I found out that Cat had come out with a new book I was very happy. I could not wait to drive in and read Revived. I was going into reading the book with very high expectations since I loved her first novel and WOW, this one just blew me away right from the first page! Oh, and look at the cover! I mean isn't it just so awesome and just the way she peaks through what looks like a thin blue membrane wondering what's on the other side.

My Review: Revived was a super fast read for me and not because it was short or the pace was fast but simply because the story itself TOTALLY ROCKED! I love to read, plain and simple but a book like this makes me see all over again why I love to read so much. Revived is one of those books where once you get done with it you feel the urge to read it again, yes it is that good! Everything about it was so sublime. The unique story-line, the evolved character's, the mystery and the thrill of what will happen next all wrapped up into a sweeeet package!

The main character, Daisy is killed in a bus crash on a icy road when she was young and died. She was brought back to life by an experimental drug called Revived and since then has died four more times since she first was brought back. A "hush hush" government agency makes and supplies the drug to the kids who died in the crash, thus for experimenting with the drug so to one day release it to the public for sale. After dying again, Daisy is being made to move to another state with yet another name change. Daisy hopes to stay here and make friends this time.

On the first day of school she meets Audrey who quickly becomes friends with her. Audrey has a brother Matt who Daisy meets the on same day. Audrey and Daisy begin to hang out with each other after school and grows into being best friends. Daisy feels a certain connection with  Audrey and for her brother Matt. As Audrey and Daisy become closer friends and Matt and Daisy begin to develop strong feelings for each other, Daisy finds out a heartbreaking secret about Audrey.  Audrey is very sick and is not expected to live much longer. Daisy is crushed by this news and hopes that maybe the drug Revived would somehow work on her friend so she would not have to die but not all things about the drug are good. Daisy will soon find out that the man behind "Revived" is playing God and has other plans for the drug.

As I feel I have given to much away as it is I will stop but let me tell you this book was simply amazing! The story keep is entertaining and had me immersed throughout the whole book. There was never a dull moment. I absolutely loved Daisy, Matt and Audrey which is rare because I seems I always tend to find one character who I loave. The book moved along in a fast pace and author Cat Patrick always seems to find away to connect to her readers throughout the book. Revived had me crying, laughing and just wanting to read faster and faster to know what would happen next. Everyone should no... NEEDS to run out and get this book! If your like me and loved Forgotten or just loves to read a book that will blow your mind then definitely read Revived!

Final Thoughts: None needed because you can plainly see how much I loved the book. =D

Book Review: Slide by Jill Hathaway

Genre: Urban Fantasy > Mystery Thriller
Reading Level: YA

Vee Bell is certain of one irrefutable truth—her sister’s friend Sophie didn’t kill herself. She was murdered.
Vee knows this because she was there. Everyone believes Vee is narcoleptic, but she doesn’t actually fall asleep during these episodes: When she passes out, she slides into somebody else’s mind and experiences the world through that person’s eyes. She’s slid into her sister as she cheated on a math test, into a teacher sneaking a drink before class. She learned the worst about a supposed “friend” when she slid into her during a school dance. But nothing could have prepared Vee for what happens one October night when she slides into the mind of someone holding a bloody knife, standing over Sophie’s slashed body.

Vee desperately wishes she could share her secret, but who would believe her? It sounds so crazy that she can’t bring herself to tell her best friend, Rollins, let alone the police. Even if she could confide in Rollins, he has been acting off lately, more distant, especially now that she’s been spending more time with Zane.

Enmeshed in a terrifying web of secrets, lies, and danger and with no one to turn to, Vee must find a way to unmask the killer before he or she strikes again.

First Impressions: Let me first talk about this gorgeous cover. I must say at first glance I fell head over heals in love with it. My favorite color has always been purple and I love how the whole cover has such a beautiful purple hue, even her face. The word "SLIDE" on the cover looks like it is literally sliding on the cover making for a unique effect. After reading what the book was about I knew I wanted to read it as soon as possible. I was so happy when I found it was at my library. I read, no DEVOURED this book in one day!

My Review: Slide is a highly anticipated debut novel of 2012. This book in no way will disappoint the reader, with twists and turns throughout that will having you guessing who did what and why. Slide is a whole new kind of urban fantasy novel unlike anything out there. The main character "Vee" or Slyliva has a very unique gift or curse if you ask her. Vee was diagnosed with what is thought to be narcolepsy. She falls asleep or passes out randomly, but what really happens is she slides into another person's body while out. She has no control when she slides or into who. Most times the person she will slide into will have some kind of connection with Vee while she is awake. One day at school Vee finds out while accidently sliding into her sister that her sister's friend Amber and her are planning to play a mean joke on a girl named Sophie who used to be friends with them. After this cruelty, Sophie is depressed and crying wondering why someone would do something so mean. That night while Vee is star gazing something pokes her from within her pocket and she begins to feel woozy. Before she knows it Vee slides into Sophie's room. She does not who she has slide into but see that the person is wearing gloves and holding a long silver blade. Sophie lies on her bed sliced up and blood is everywhere. Now it is up to Vee to find out who killed Sophie and made it look like a suicide.
This book is packed full of so much mystery and suspense. I never knew what would happen next or who she would Slide into to try to uncover who really killed Sophie. I was so engulfed in the story needing to know what would happen next I did not remember to eat lunch. The author's writing style was flawless and the pace of the story was lightning fast especially when you MUST know what will happen next. I love a book that will keep me guessing and end with a "I never saw that coming"! Wow, just WOW!! I would definitely say that Slide is one of the best novels I have read in a long time. Everything about this book is exceptional!

Final Thoughts: If I could tell author Jill Hathaway one thing it would have to be "Slide rocked my socks off"! I was not expecting such an exhilarating story and one that I could read over and over with no lack of excitement. Vee was just awesome with a CAPITAL, V!! The ending was a "I did not see that coming" moment and I am still trying to pick my chin off the floor. I SO NEED the next book in this series, but while I wait I have the chance to tell each of you to go out NOW and buy or rent SLIDE. YOU will not be sorry you did. =D

{Book Review:} Chopsticks by Jessica Anthony

Title: Chopsticks

Star Rating: ★★★★1/2

After her mother died, Glory retreated into herself and her music. Her single father raised her as a piano prodigy, with a rigid schedule and the goal of playing sold-out shows across the globe. Now, as a teenager, Glory has disappeared. As we flash back to the events leading up to her disappearance, we see a girl on the precipice of disaster. Brilliant and lonely, Glory is drawn to an artistic new boy, Frank, who moves in next door. The farther she falls, the deeper she spirals into madness. Before long, Glory is unable to play anything but the song "Chopsticks."
But nothing is what it seems, and Glory's reality is not reality at all. In this stunningly moving novel told in photographs, pictures, and words, it's up to the reader to decide what is real, what is imagined, and what has been madness all along....

First Impressions: After seeing Chopsticks mentioned on many different blogs I sought out to find out more info about the book. Little did I know that the story in the book is not told is words  but through images not like most novels I have read. I was not sure how I would like a novel like this and was somewhat hesitant to request it at my library. So I decided to wait and read a few more reviews on the book to see if they would spark my attention. I can across Jess's review - here and loved it. So that day I got the book and read it.

Review:  Who ever said a picture is worth a thousand words knew exactly what they were talking about. While the "Chopsticks" story is told with all images and very few words the book somehow finds a way into the readers heart. I  truly adored how this beautiful and romantic tale was only told from the images on the pages. The story itself is fresh and unique; it sucks you in from the first page until the last leaving you wanting more. I picked up the book and read (or rather looked at) and I was done in less than a hour. All of the images are simply stunning and bring the story to life. Both main character's of the book, Glory and Frank, find each other and fall in love only to be ripped apart from each other suddenly. Glory is a piano prodigy and must leave to go on tour and leaves Frank alone and sad. The images move along in a fast pace and takes the reader through this couple's struggle and hardships. The love and romance is breathtaking between Glory and Frank and even more because you are able to see it with your own eyes. I so fell in love with Chopsticks and so very happy that I decided to take a chance on this book.

Final Thoughts: I would definitely say go out and read this book. It is a very fun, romantic, and exciting read. I have never read a book that relies on images to tell the story but I can say it was a unique experience. So my readers can see some examples of what the book likes like I am going to shares a few images from the book.

{Book Review:} Fracture by Megan Miranda

Title: Fracture
Author: Megan Miranda
Published: January 17th 2012 by Walker Childrens
Source: Library (paperback)
Reading Level: Young Adult & Up
Star Rating: ★★★1/2
Add on Goodreads

Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she's far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can't control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it?

Then Delaney meets Troy Varga, who recently emerged from a coma with similar abilities. At first she's reassured to find someone who understands the strangeness of her new existence, but Delaney soon discovers that Troy's motives aren't quite what she thought. Is their gift a miracle, a freak of nature-or something much more frightening?
First Impressions: First I must say I really love the cover of the book which is one of the reason's that I decided to read Fracture in the first place. The other was that I kept hearing so many great things about it and reading such amazing reviews on the book that I knew I would have to read it soon after it hit the book stores. I really liked the idea behind this novel and after reading more into what Fracture was about I went to pick it up to read so I could see for myself how good this book is... and I am very happy I did.

Review: The beginning of the book had a very strong hold on my attention. The plot was engaging and fast paced. Delaney who is the main character of the book falls through some thin ice while trying to run and catch up to her best friend Decker who is waiting far ahead. Delaney is sucked under the ice and soon to be rescued but was under the ice for far to long; 11 minutes. Delaney's heart and brain stopped working. She is dead, or was. Somehow Delaney came back and not even her Doctors can understand how she is alive and more so how she is doing okay. But Delaney is far from being okay because now some very unusual things begin to happen. She can sense or literally feel when someone is near her who is about to die. She does not know who to turn to about her new found ability, not Decker; ever know he is her best friend and the one who saved her from the ice. Decker seems to be tired up with "other" things (or someone). Delaney feels lost and depressed and does not understand what is happening to her until one day when she feel the "pull" of death near her but comes finds more that she thought she would...someone who knows exactly what she feels. Troy - who has the same abilities as Delaney although he is using his abilities in a different way.

I don't want to go into anymore details about the story as a whole otherwise I would be giving to much away. I was going through some ups and downs while reading Fracture. While I really loved and was fully immersed in the story I found myself having to stop reading a certain points in the book. The beginning of the book I felt was amazing but toward the middle it seemed to slowed down some and I lost interest during a few chapters. One of the things I did not really care for was how whiny Delaney was towards the middle/end of the book. She keep talking about how her life was so depressing and awful. Like she would have been better of dead. She is a very dramatic and hard character to like. She was given a gift somehow and is pissed off at the world for having to life and deal with it. I can understand the author's point of having Delaney feel this distraught and angry; she went thought a lot in such a short period of time but it turned me off and  began disliking Delaney for being so whiny.

I will say I loved Megan Miranda writing style and how she was so detailed about the condition (ability) Delaney and Troy have. Her words are so expressive and give the novel such life. I so love to be able to get a clear image of what is happening in the book. I find it to be fun and more imaginative for the reader to read a novel and feel what the characters are feeling. Fracture is a great mystery with many twist and turns through-out the book. Although it was not as good as I thought it would be I did truly enjoy the story.

Final Thoughts: I would recommend the book to others after reading Fracture although as for myself being told to read it many times my friends I was hoping for a bit more and did not find that "wow" factor I was looking for in the book. All in all I would say I enjoyed it and I think to be honest I did love the ending the most. I did shed a tear or two. Very touching.

{Book Review:} Don't Breathe A Word by Holly Cupala

Title: Don't Breathe A Word
Author: Holly Cupala
Number of pages: 299

Published: January 3rd 2012 by HarperTeen
Source: Local library
Star Rating:  ★★★★

Joy Delamere is suffocating...
From asthma, which has nearly claimed her life. From her parents, who will do anything to keep that from happening. From delectably dangerous Asher, who is smothering her from the inside out. Joy can take his words - tender words, cruel words - until the night they go too far. Now, Joy will leave everything behind to find the one who has offered his help, a homeless boy called Creed. She will become someone else. She will learn to survive. She will breathe... if only she can get to Creed before it’s too late. Set against the gritty backdrop of Seattle’s streets and a cast of characters with secrets of their own, Holly Cupala’s powerful new novel explores the subtleties of abuse, the meaning of love, and how far a girl will go to discover her own strength.

Sometimes you pick up a book knowing you can relate to what the author wrote about and with Holly Cupala's new debut novel; Don't Breathe a Word I knew it would be one of those books. Not because I personally have been homeless or felt I needed to live in the streets because of issues that have taken place in my life but I have a dear friend of mine who shall be remain nameless who is homeless and is living a daily hard life on the streets of the city of where I live. So when I saw this book all over Goodreads and book blogs I knew it was something I had to read. You just can't understand what a homeless person's life really is like unless you live a day in there shoes. Don't Breathe a Word does a perfect job at helping the reader feel what it would be like to be homeless and lost with no way out. When I first started reading about Joy I did not understand why she was choosing to leave her home and live alone on the street on Seattle. What could be that bad in her life that she felt she had to leave? But once you read more into the book and the back-story of the events that take place with certain people you begin to understand why Joy felt she had no other choice. My heard just went out for her and the unfairness of it all. That fact that Joy felt she had no one she could turn to. When she made the hard decision to leave and try to make it out on the streets it seemed like she still could not have been cut a break. Joy learned the hard way that things are not easy wherever she went. Dealing with her asthma was beginning to break her down. The story really began to pick up when another homeless boy named Creed came into the picture. Creed, along with his friends (who are also homeless) slowing helped Joy adjust to her new surroundings, even got her some new medicine after Joy's inhalers where stolen. I felt like each of the character's that Holly added to this book where so likable and had there own unique story about how they ended up on the streets. While reading I just felt like I was there with them and could relate to what they were going through, such a real and scary experience. A few parts of the book I just cried because I know these are real problems and the author did a beautiful job at capturing each event and experience the character's felt and went through. The main thing I also loved about Don't Breath A Word was is not just a book about abuse, sadness, making hard decisions, heartbreak, or surviving but about finding yourself, learning to be strong, and love!
