Game Of Thrones: 5 Ways Season 6 Could Stray From The Novels

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS

Season six of Game Of Thrones is set to premiere at the end of April, and while there's always excitement for a new season of HBO's hit show, this year feels a little bit different. That's because, as has been written about extensively, author George R.R. Martin failed to publish the next novel in the series before season six was filmed (and indeed there's still no word on when the book will be out). And because season five more or less caught up to most of the plot lines in the fifth book, A Dance With Dragons, season six will mark the first time we've seen HBO plowing ahead without the books to guide them.

Most fans always knew this was going to be the case. Martin is a notoriously slow writer (which of course is his right, particularly given the amount of detail he packs into this series), and HBO isn't about to put the show on hiatus just to let the books roll out. There have been various, vague indications that the show runners have been let in on certain storylines that Martin intends to write. But it certainly sounds like the books and the show will diverge at least to some extent this season.

But how will they diverge? Well, we'll begin to find out at the end of April. In the meantime, however, it doesn't hurt to speculate! Here are five ways the new season may well branch off from the books and Martin's plans moving forward.

1. Stannis Baratheon May Be Dead

Stannis Baratheon was dealt a crushing defeat toward the end of season five of the show. The last time we saw him he was sitting wounded against a tree as he was confronted by Brienne of Tarth. Seeking to avenge her beloved Renly, Brienne appeared to finish Stannis off (and Stannis appeared to accept his fate). But as the sword swung and thudded, the scene cut away; she could well have simply swung it into the tree and decided to spare him.

By contrast, the books simply mentioned the defeat of Stannis's army, but not the confrontation with Brienne. In response to fans wondering about the rightful king's fate, Martin has confirmed that Stannis is still meant to be alive in the books. However, David Nutter (who directed the episode featuring the incident with Brienne) has said that Stannis is meant to have been killed in the show. However, this could always be misdirection and for now we just don't know. If Stannis is dead it's a pretty serious departure for the show.

Aegon Might Not Exist

Let's get one thing straight: GoT fans love Targaryen lore. The idea of an ancient, but extinct, line of kings who rode dragons and ruled the land with an iron grip is simply fascinating, particularly when there are still stray descendants sprinkled around the land. A gamers' blog even suggested that Targaryen subplots and prequel tales would make good additions to the popular Game Of Thrones-based Telltale Games series, despite the fact that such tales don't exist in literature or on TV yet. It's a popular concept.

And yet it appears that the show is ready to cut out one of the few Targaryen subplots we do have. In A Dance With Dragons it was revealed that a boy named Young Griff was actually a Targaryen in hiding - specifically Aegon, son of Rhaegar and nephew to Daenerys. Supported by Varys and directed by Tyrion to start conquering Westeros to win Daenerys's respect, Aegon is leading a suspenseful story that hasn't yet been fleshed out by Martin. But all indications are that no one has been cast in such a role for season six on TV.

Cersei Might Go Wild

Let's remember one thing before we get into this one: the Lannister credo is among the most ominous in Westeros, as well as one of the most popularly quoted. Any fan of the books or show can reference it, and indeed it's even been used as the backdrop for a GoT-based slot gaming experience. Game Of Thrones Slots is described via the phrase "although the Baratheons award the most, a Lannister pays his debts." In that case it's a play on money earned and owed in a casino gaming format - in the show, however, it refers to vengeance.

The question isn't whether or not Cersei has some "debts" to pay. Rather, it's how ballistic she's going to go. At the end of A Dance With Dragons, Cersei seemed somewhat crippled, back with her support system and undoubtedly fuming, but weakened. In the show, however, while the same is true, we could already see the fire burning in Lena Headey's eyes. And there's one more key detail: in the show, her daughter Myrcella has been murdered (and she doesn't even know it yet). If she finds out this season we could see a full-on tyrannical rampage, whereas in the books Myrcella's fate is a little murky at this point.

Theon May Find Redemption A Different Way

At the end of season five, we saw Theon Greyjoy overcome his psychological ruin to do the right thing and help Sansa escape Winterfell. It looked vaguely like a suicide (which under the circumstances would qualify as a kind of escape), though every indication is that we'll soon find out they survived the fall.

Where we last saw Theon in the books, there were hints of a more personal brand of redemption. He was essentially pulled out of his personal hell when he heard Bran's voice reaching out to him in the Winterfell Godswood. The only thing that seems certain is that at least on some level Theon will redeem his unforgivable actions. But it looks like it's going to happen very differently in the books and show.

And Then There's Jon Snow

I'll put it this way: we have no idea if Jon is alive (or how he's alive) in the show or the books. We know that Kit Harington will be present in season six, and it's begun to seem inevitable that he's either been brought back to life or that he somehow didn't die when we watched quarts of blood spill out of his body and onto the snow. In the books, it's perhaps even more difficult to predict his fate because we couldn't see the stabbing happening and there's no Kit Harrington on set rumor for books. But given how much the show and the books are straying from one another it feels pretty likely that the Snow saga will be handled in different ways.

Movie Review: The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 2

Today I have something different for you all, a movie review! I was recently emailed by a guy named Spencer. He has volunteered to write a guest review  as tribute! He will be sharing his thoughts on the amazing and final movie in the Hunger Games series, MockingJay Part 2! Hope you all enjoy!

Final Glimpse of the Hunger Games

With the final Hunger Games film installment, Mockingjay Part 2, in theaters, we join Katniss and company for one final trip to the Capital City. The film series, based on the bestselling young adult trilogy by Suzanne Collins, has produced four films, with the third book in the series adapted into two films in much the same way as the final installment of the Harry Potter series. The first three films in the series, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay Part 1 were all huge box office successes, and this latest and last in the series is fully expected to follow their lead.

While some critics feel that breaking up the final novel in the trilogy into two films wasn’t necessary, particularly as the first part was noticeably slower paced than the second, the novel itself provided enough material to justify two movies as the second quickly picks up almost exactly where the first ended. Jennifer Lawrence gives her final performance in the lead, with Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth as Peeta and Gale, respectively, and the film continues the trend of its predecessors in remaining as faithful to the source material as any adaptation can reasonably be.

Just as in the novel, the characters on the screen have grown and matured throughout their journeys and trials. In the first novel, Katniss’s rebellion was strictly in the form of going outside of the designated District 12 area to hunt with her friend Gale, and it was motivated strictly by the need to provide for her family and survive. Even her taking Prim’s place as tribute for the games was simply an act of love and protection rather than defiance against authority. However throughout the film series, as in the novel series, we get to watch as Katniss not only grows up, but comes to understand and therefore be more cynical of the machinations of the world and those in charge of its politics.

Revelations and realizations such as Katniss experiences are all too relatable for today’s youth, who more often than not are left to consider what type of world they will inherit in a few short years. Between global terrorism and political upheavals both abroad and at home, competing for attention with issues of global warming and messages of impending environmental doom, the future must seem particularly daunting for today’s young adults, the target audience for the dystopian literature that’s all the rage over the last few years. Add to this the uncertainty of the economy and the disproportionate distribution of wealth in this country, and it must seem at times that we live in our own personal Panam right here in the U.S.

As a fan of both the novel series and the movies based on them, it’s always bittersweet when the final installment has run its course (catch up on the first three films on Hulu or DTV). Nonetheless, it’s refreshing for literature fans when the movie is faithful to its source material, regardless of how sadly or shockingly the story ends. Mockingjay Part 2 is no exception to this, and fans of the book will not be disappointed. For all of her pain and despair, Katniss maintains her independence and strength of will to the end, making her final choices based on her own moral compass and observations, taking the action she deems right rather than the easy way out - both a lesson worth learning and a character trait worth emulating.

Only fools fall in love…

After her senior year of high school leaves behind nothing but heartache, Olivia Beaumont is sure of this: She’s no stupid girl. She sets out for Winston College, promising herself that she will remain focused on her first and only love – astronomy. But all it takes is cocky sophomore Brax Jenkins and an accidental collision with a football, to throw her entire year off course.

A quick-tempered Southie who escaped the inner city streets of Boston to pitch for Winston, Brax is known to play way more fields than just the baseball diamond. So, when his name is drawn to take part in his fraternity’s hazing dare, Brax eagerly accepts the mission to take Olivia’s virginity. But he doesn’t plan on falling hard for the sweet and sassy Texas girl who sees right through his bad-boy persona.

As Olivia and Brax battle their feelings for each other, echoes of the past year begin to surface. A boy who once turned Olivia’s whole world upside down reappears, and “harmless” pranks wreak havoc. Pretty soon the aspiring astronomer is on the verge of revealing her most difficult, heartbreaking secret. All the while, Brax must wrestle with the irrevocable dare, and Olivia struggles against all logic as she does the one thing only a stupid girl would do: fall in love.

What to Read Next...

From Cindy Miles, bestselling new adult author of STUPID GIRL, comes the next installment of her blockbuster Stupid in Love series – STUPID BOY.

Brax Jenkins and Olivia Beaumont are the most envied couple at Winston College—but the so-called “virginity dare,” orchestrated by Brax’s old fraternity, almost tore them apart. Now, a new dare is taking shape, and it’s sure to set the campus ablaze with crazy new rumors and chaos.

Winston’s “It Girl” Harper Bell isn’t just president of Alpha Delta Phi—she’s also a master at keeping her ugly past a secret. So, when the Kappas’ dare hits closer to home for her more than anyone realizes, she devises a competition of her own as payback. Three sorority sisters will seek out a notorious bad boy, train him to be the perfect boyfriend, seduce him almost to the point of no return, and promptly—and publicly—break his heart. Always up for a challenge, Harper targets the biggest player she can find: Brax’s wickedly handsome foster brother Kane McCarthy.

But, Harper discovers there’s much more to Kane than girls, games, and partying. His easy smile belies the quiet, old soul reflected in his deep brown eyes. All it takes is one night, one secret laid bare, and one kiss from Kane to shift Harper’s world on its axis. Suddenly, the girl who’s always walked a straight and narrow path can’t think of anything else except losing control.

I love books. But I love movies, too. Combine the two? WOW! I’m THERE! Of course, there are times when the two clash: you like the book better, or the movie didn’t do the book justice. That sucks! There are just so many wonderful, fine details you find in a novel that just can’t cross over into a movie, not to mention the fact that when a reader engages in a story, they perceive things, even in a slight form, different from another reader. But I do love when it comes together!

I adore all of the Harry Potter books. I ADORE all of the Harry Potter movies. A-DORE! I think that while there is so much contained in the books, so many fine details and magic, the movies really did do the books justice. There absolutely couldn’t have been found a more perfect Harry Potter. A more perfect Ronald Weasley, or Hermoine Grainger. There just couldn’t, in my eyes. Professor Snape? Couldn’t have been anyone other than Alan Rickman. Absolute magic in my eyes.

JAWS. I read the book (much to my grandmother’s dismay) and loved it. The movie? Well it was the very first summer blockbuster, and for a reason. Classic fabulousness, that’s what. Yes, it varies from the book. But it did so in ways that didn’t bother me. Not at all. Those characters came to life on the big screen, and Sheriff Brody, Quint, and Matt Hooper couldn’t have been more perfect. My son and I have movie quote wars constantly, and JAWS is always one of our go-to’s. ☺

THE SHINING. Good Lord! So perfect! LOVED the book. I mean Stephen King is by far one of my heroes! The movie was a thriller that still gets me to this day.

What I’d like to see be made into a movie? Lately, I’ve read BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA by April Genevieve Tucholke and man, would I love to see that to film. It’s a great book that really stuck in my head. I’m reading the sequel now, BETWEEN THE SPARK AND THE BURN. And probably MRS. PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN by Ransom Riggs. AWESOME BOOK! That’d be a cool movie, too!

The best of this year’s book to film adaptations!

Today I bring you a fun guest post about book to film adaptations. The guest post writer wishes to remain anonymous. Enjoy!

The best of this year’s book to film adaptations!

Book to film adaptations always cause a stir -When done well, movies can bring books to life, fleshing out the characters and providing new and interesting interpretations.

If you’re on the lookout for new DVD releases based on your favorite books, you should have plenty of choice. This year has seen a bumper crop of films based on novels, and here are some of the best.

Labor Day

In January 2014, ‘Labor Day’ hit the big screen. Starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, it is based on a Joyce Maynard book of the same name. Directed by Jason Reitman, the movie focuses on a teenage boy and his depressed, single mother. They encounter an escaped convict, who manages to come across as both intimidating and vulnerable. Winslet is superb as the anguished mother in this unlikely tale of romance and Brolin puts in a strong performance too.

Winter's Tale

‘Winter’s Tale’, which was released in February 2014, also received critical praise. Based on the 1983 novel by Mark Helprin, it is set in the early 1900s and centers on a gang member called Peter Lake. While burgling a house, he meets a beautiful woman. However, after falling for her, he discovers she is dying from consumption. From this point on, things take a supernatural turn. Starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay and Russell Crowe, the movie was directed by Akiva Goldsman.

The Hundred-Foot Journey

August 2014 saw the release of ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’. Based on a book by Richard C Morais, the film follows the story of an Indian family who move to France, where they open a restaurant across the street from a Michelin-rated eatery. There then ensues a fierce rivalry between the two establishments. Starring Dame Helen Mirren and produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, the movie proved a box office success.

The Giver

Also hitting screens in August 2014 was ‘The Giver’. Based on a 1993 children’s novel by Lois Lowry, this chilling tale is set in a society that at first appears utopian, but gradually reveals itself to be anything but - It follows a boy named Jonas, who discovers the dark truths of his community’s past. Directed by Phillip Noyce, it stars Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard and Taylor Swift.

Whether you’ve read the novels on which these films are based or not, the movies are well worth a watch. There are many titles made into films each year, the big screen is your oyster, so get out there and do some research!
