Silver Hollow by Jennifer Silverwood
Genre: Paranormal Romance/ Fantasy
Romance/ Chick-lit
Publisher: SilverWoodSketches
ISBN: 1481000144
Number of pages: 322
Cover Artist: Najla Qamber

Amie Wentworth writes paranormal romances, not because she is looking for a
degree in ectoplasm, but because she’s got bills to pay. Ever since her parents’ car
crash, she has been led a reclusive life and trusted books more than people. Not
even a letter from her long-lost uncle, begging her to visit, gives Amie incentive
for anything other than ire – until she is stabbed in an alley and brought back to life
by a mysterious stranger.

After crossing the Atlantic to her father’s homeland, Amie is dragged into the very
sort of tale she is used to selling. Silver Hollow is a place of ancient traditions and
supernatural dangers, where everything is the opposite of what it seems and few
escape sane.

To make matters worse, the man who saved her life keeps turning up and her
would-be-murderer is still at large.

But when she comes face to face with the ugly truth, will she too be sucked into
her father’s madness? Or will she discover that madness is just another name for
honesty?

The hour before dawn found Amie pulling her car round the back alley. Through the gloom and decades-buried waste behind Pat’s Delights was a narrow strip leading to the back staircase leading up to her flat.
The stranger’s face came unbidden to her as she gathered her things and moved her weary legs. Black eyes set deeply in a shadow-drenched face haunted her, eyes which seemed to accuse and praise, sift and wonder. Now that she knew, she realized she must have seen him before today, maybe even in the past she had tried to forget.
The faded yellowing parchment marked with heavy black ink, with words too absurd to be true, flashed in her mind. Clutching the key hidden in her jeans pockets while digging through her purse for her keys, she remembered Uncle Henry’s letter. Mulling over the words, she once again recalled how angry she had been ten years ago after reading his first note. So what the cops were uncertain how the accident had happened. So what her father had known some powerful people. Amie had been primped and pushed into the upper-class social sphere through her teens and knew how to handle that sort. She could take care of herself just like she always had. She would tear up the letters and the tickets tonight. The twins and James were her family now.
As she placed her shoe upon the first rickety metal step, two thick and powerful hands grabbed her in the same moment.
It happened so quickly she forgot to scream. Dropping her purse she struggled, kicked and bucked against the crazy person lifting her and pulling her deeper into the shadows of the alley. And the harder she struggled the tighter his choking embrace became against her chest.
She thought at last to cry out, only to feel her face being smashed against a brick wall. She gasped as the figure suddenly pushed her aside, out of his embrace. Amie stumbled back and nearly tripping over a metal pipe. She righted herself only to come face-to-face with the black-masked figure. His brilliant blue eyes blazed into hers, now filled with unmistakable purpose. Too late she realized his intentions as a sickeningly cool object was plunged into her chest and pulled quickly out again.
Her vision swam, then blurred as she slumped against the trash-littered concrete. Her mind began to fade into an ever-deepening sleep though her eyes watched on. The black-garbed man was fighting someone else. Unmasked, this guy was taller, broader in the shoulders than her murderer and wrought by fury.
Pain…she had not known the meaning of the word before now and even this too was fading into the deep sleep. The further she fell the less sense the scene before her made. Her mind didn’t believe that the tall man had really tossed her attacker five feet into the air over his shoulder and into the brick, or a strange light and energy crackled in the suddenly luminous alley.
She was too afraid to hope when a pair of warm hands cradled her in a firm embrace. He pulled her from the muck and fixed his dark eyes on her. Obsidian-cut eyes, familiar eyes, pierced through her gaze and reached deeper. His face, once so indiscernible it could be called plain, was now twisted as though in agony. Even though she was slipping, falling into a calm quiet darkness, he refused to let her go. His hand moved from her neck to her cheek with the faintest touch. He pushed past and clasped hold of something tearing deep inside of her then. The black of his irises gave way to a strange mix of blue and green flecks gleaming in their depths. She saw…
Fields of brilliant emerald grass and a sun filled with more colors than she knew to name.
Darkness and a dirty cell, where heavy fists punctuated his pain.
Time beyond counting became a lifetime lost.
A green-eyed dark-haired beauty bathed in sunlight stretched out her hand to him.
Someone was screaming. Amie frowned as the woman’s cries grew louder. Pain spiked up in her chest as her lungs constricted and her heart was ripped apart then reformed. The woman’s screams died when she took a breath and realized the voice was hers.
She blinked.
And then she was lying within the narrow strip between two brick buildings, alone.

Beginnings & Sisterhoods

I remember my dad once telling me, every time he performed a piano piece in front of an audience, that he never worried about the middle part as much as the end or beginning. Because what’s important is that you begin and end well, even if you mess up somewhere along the way. And if you play your cards right, you can fool the audience into thinking it was meant to be played that way.
Now obviously writing books and playing music are two completely different things, but they’re not as separate as people might think. Everyone wants to know what the author listened to while writing their books, and if they don’t want to at least they’d be interested in finding out. And the way we throw ourselves into crafting a finely polished, finished “piece,” is the same way a musician gives their lives daily to master their instrument and those notes.
I started Silver Hollow with a book within a book. Ever since The Neverending Story, I’ve loved the idea of worlds within worlds, especially worlds within books. But there was a time when I played around with a couple different beginnings to this story. After consulting my life long betas, the twins, I decided to stick with what you can see now.
If you’ve been following this tour, then you might already know how much I owe Silver Hollow to the two ladies who helped inspire the story in the first place. I wrote for them as much as me growing up. Partly because we grew up in the country and there was nothing more entertaining to do, and mostly because we honestly loved working on our books together.
Our brainstorming sessions in the past often sounded something like this:
Faye: Think Jo needs to die!
Jo: I think you do!
Faye: I can’t, I’m fading with the wind!
Jo: Whatever! I’ll pull you underneath the sea so the shark dwellers can feed on your body down there!
You get the gist. Another thing that changed during the big overhaul transformation with Allison (another bestie who I couldn’t have finished this project without! She pretty much helped me write the second draft) were the flashbacks.
Originally they were flashbacks to Amie’s time with her parents and growing up with the twins. I hated scrapping them for plot purposes, but it had to be done. And because y’all have been so awesome and I like sharing secret things, here they are for your viewing pleasure.

Draft 1 Flashback- the sisterhood
Amie’s family had made a holiday of it that summer. It was going to be a slam bang Fourth of July no matter how much her father protested. But if Amie had to hear one more story about how America betrayed its mother nation she might just lose it for real this year.
Jo and Faye helped her convince him in the end, argued that if he hated America so much he wouldn’t have rushed here in the first place.
Low and behold but Drustan Wentworth had the most fun that night. He was laughing and swapping stories with Robert, the twins’ balding cop dad. Their mothers shook their heads over the men’s antics. And while their parents’ backs were turned to the fireworks display on the lake, Amie twirled her sparklers.
So she freaked when Faye jumped in her line of vision, eyes gleaming mischievously, “Hey!”
“Good grief Faye I almost set your hair on fire!” Amie grumbled. Faye was trying to communicate something with her eyes, which as usual came off as hardly subtle. Jerking her head back to the trees behind them finally turned Amie’s vision. Sure enough a flashlight blinked at them once, then twice.
Amie groaned. “Now? We’re about to make smores!” Faye hooked arms and was already dragging her into the forest.
“Come on, if we don’t leave now we won’t have the chance.” And then she went into Mission Impossible mode, jumping behind trees, fingers bent into fake guns. Amie usually joined in. But she was too bitter over the chocolate marshmallow pieces of heaven she was missing out on.
Jo stood up once they reached her hiding spot, flashlight under her chin. “Whahaha!” Amie rolled her eyes but couldn’t help her grin. Jo had the effect of lightening anyone’s bad moods when she wanted. Turning to Faye, “What took you so long beans?!”
Faye held up a hand, currently the latest cool fad apparently. “Whatever! You know I’m working on my ninja skills. I needed the practice.”
Amie interrupted the brewing argument, “Where are we going that’s so great y’all took me away from my chocolate?”
Faye stopped them at the middle of an empty glade. Fireworks crackled in the distance. Through the uppermost branches they could still see a shower of lights. Hands braced on Amie’s shoulders, the taller twin rushed to a dark heap on the ground. “First you need one of these!” When she twirled back around three nets were in her hands.
Amie stared, “We’re catching butterflies? Are you kidding me? It’s almost midnight!”
Jo jumped up and down, clearly on another sugar high and blew a pink bubble the size of her fist. “Yeah beans!”
“No!” Faye argued. “Fireflies. So take one and wait for it.” They sat together in that glade for what felt like an hour to three preteens, and in reality was more like five minutes, before the first blinking lights appeared.
And Amie’s foul mood disappeared the moment not one but dozens of golden lights began to buzz around them. She’d never seen anything like it. It was just like one of father’s stories…magical. They captured fireflies and placed them inside the giant glass jar Jo brought. After poking holes the girls sat in a circle around that jar and made a solemn vow.
“I solemnly swear to always be true to the sisters three…” Amie recited while placing her palm over the two already covering the jar. They all smiled. Thus the secret AJSS club was born.

You’ll be seeing more glimpses behind Amie and the twins’ friendship again in the future. For now, I hope you’ve enjoyed yet another piece of this “making of” expose. I am so thankful that the twins helped me begin well and Silver Hollow wouldn’t have come into being without them. They were there with me in the beginning and I look forward to seeing what life’s adventures hold for us next, Faye and Jo.

Book Review: Hollywood Car Wash by Lori Culwell

Title: Hollywood Car Wash
Author: Lori Culwell
Number of Pages: 320
Published: May 5th 2009 by Simon & Schuster
Source: Author (paperback)
Genre: Contemporary > Chick Lit
Reading Level: YA - Adult
Star Rating: ★★★

College drama student Amy Spencer dreams of starring in independent films. When her roommate signs her up for a mysterious "television project" audition, she blows away the competition with her girl-next-door looks and impressive acting chops, inadvertently getting a starring role on a major TV show and going from Michigan teen to Hollywood starlet overnight.

To keep the part she didn't even know she wanted, Amy finds herself taking a spin through the "Hollywood Car Wash" to make her more marketable. First, she'll have to lose twenty pounds (don't ask how). Then it's new clothes, new teeth, blonder hair, new friends, and a megastar, high-profile boyfriend (though hers comes with a big secret). Bombarded by jealous, two-faced colleagues, overeager plastic surgeons, and manipulative network executives, Amy slowly learns that the only way to survive in Hollywood is to lose her identity. Will Amy get too caught up by the glitz or will she get a grip on her life before it's too late?

Hollywood Car Wash is the second book I have read by author Lori Culwell. The first being her latest novel "The Dirt".  I was not sure what to expect going into this one but I will say I did hope I would love it as much as I did The Dirt. I was right, so right! This book has everything from interesting characters to a fun and engrossing story-line. I mean I know everyone loves hearing some juicy gossip. It's all about the world of fame and fortune and how one young woman rises to to the top and what she does to get there.

When Amy Spencer gets the chance to audition for a major role in a TV series called Autumn Leaves. She goes to California for the audition hoping this is her break to make it big. When she gets a call back for another audition then another for the TV series. Amy now has high hopes that they loved her acting and will ask her to sign a contract. So when Amy gets "THE" call and finds out that the studio was blown away by her auditions and wants her to be the newest STAR and Amy is beyond thrilled. She will now have the chance to be a real actress and help her family with their financial problems as well. At first everything is great. Amy has just about EVERYTHING handed to her on a plate. Free food, new clothes, a huge room in a fancy hotel and is always being showered by gifts. Amy is living the high live and knows it. One day when she is called in to speak with one of the network executives. Amy is told she needs to make major changes in order to boost the shows ratings. They want her to lose weight, chance her hair and many more aspects of her body but the biggest change comes when they asks her to chance his name to STAR instead of Amy. While Amy feels she looks fine the way she is and likes her name.  She ends up doing as told, only to find out she really likes the new Amy Star. As Autumn Leaves becomes more and more popular, so does Star. She will she risk everything to continue to climb the ladder to fame and fortune even if it means losing her true self along the way.

I personally never watch TV shows about actors and actresses like Entertainment tonight. I could really care less about them. This book really opened my eyes and gave me a real inside look how today's celebs live and deal with their fame and fortune. Lori Culwell really did a excellent job at portraying the life of a celebrity and making the reader understand it. The book is very face paced and highly entertaining that I could not put the book down.
Although I did have a couple problem area's for me in the book, one being how Amy did anything and everything she was told, whether she liked it or not. I felt like she lost her soul when she signed that contract deal. I literally was "shaking my head" when she agrees to do certain things to her body when the network asked. I had a deep sense of pity for her and wanted to she her be true to herself.

I give this book much praise and would so recommend Hollywood Car Wash to my readers. I feel it is a really great and eye opening story for anyone who enjoys watching or reading about celebrities. Author Lori Culwell has definitely written a superstar novel.

Book Review: Pushing The Limits by Katie McGarry

Title: Pushing The Limits
Author: Katie McGarry
Number of Pages: 384
Published: July 31st 2012 by Harlequin Teen
Source: Publisher
Genre: Contemporary
Reading Level: YA
Star Rating: ★★★

No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.

Three Words: OH. MY. GOD!!!

I was so totally floored by how amazing this book was. I mean I know I keep hearing all of these great reviews raving about how GOOD Pushing The Limits was but I was still a little hesitant to believe them all. I am so, so, so happy I was able to read this book. Everything about it was so perfect. The Story, the characters, the drama, the romance between Echo and Noah. Once I was done reading, I clutched the book to my chest and did not want to let go. There are books out there that after you finish them you just have this great sense of awe and feeling of happiness. Pushing The Limits gave me that feeling but yet a small part of me was sad that the book was over. I wanted to know more about what happens to Echo and Noah. What their future holds together.

If you have read the book then you know the story of Echo and Noah but if you still have yet to read it then I will not go into a whole of details about the story. I don't want to spoil anything for new readers. So the story consits of a girl named Echo and a boy named Noah. Both are dealing with there own problems, hardships, and loss. Echo lives with her controlling Father and step-mother. She is trying hard to have a normal life again after what happen to her one night when she was with her real mother. Echo does not remember anything of that night and is told her brain is blocking her memories. One thing she knows for sure is that she has scars on her hands and wrists but doesn't now to where they came from.
Noah is your YUMMY, hot bad boy with that I don't give a f*** additude that ever girl wants to have. Under that rough exterior Noah has secrets himself. His Mother and Father died in a fire years ago leaving him and her two younger brothers alone. They were split up and put into foster care. Noah will go to the ends of the earth to get his bothers back.

Both Echo and Noah's world soon collide in a turn of events in which their lives both will be changed forever.

I just fell head of heels in love with Pushing The Limits. I know I rave about a lot of books I love but this one by far just rocked my world. I was not expecting such a outstanding read. Author Katie McGarry is a GOD! Well, not really but she is very awesome!! Her style of writing and how well her characters evolve with each chapter makes for a entrancing read.
I loved how edgy the story was and the characters. She did not hold anything back while writing.  I cannot recommend Pushing The Limits enough. This book is a MUST read. You will not be disappointing

Book Review: Take a Bow by Elizabeth Eulberg

Title: Take a Bow
Author: Elizabeth Eulberg
Number of Pages: 278
Published: April 1st 2012 by Point
Source: Library
Genre: Contemporary
Reading Level: YA
Star Rating: ★★★
Emme, Sophie, Ethan, and Carter are seniors at a performing arts school, getting ready for their Senior Showcase recital, where the pressure is on to appeal to colleges, dance academies, and professionals in show business. For Sophie, a singer, it's been great to be friends with Emme, who composes songs for her, and to date Carter, soap opera heartthrob who gets plenty of press coverage. Emme and Ethan have been in a band together through all four years of school, but wonder if they could be more than just friends and bandmates. Carter has been acting since he was a baby, and isn't sure how to admit that he'd rather paint than perform. The Senior Showcase is going to make or break each of the four, in a funny, touching, spectacular finale that only Elizabeth Eulberg could perform.

Young adult Contemporary novels are huge right now and I myself have developed a love for this genre of books. Take a Bow is a prime example of why I love contemporary. I feel in love with the book right from the beginning. The story is told from 4 different points of view and while I have not been a big fan of these types of books; Take a Bow was just perfect to a tee. The author did a wonderful job with melding the four character's stories together. Sophie, Emme, Ethan, and Carter each had there own unique and enriching tale to tell. I found myself wanting to keep reading more and more so I may find out what happen next.

Emme is a songwriter and writes many songs for her best friend Sophie to sing. She is too shy and scared to be up in the spotlight for herself.

Sophie wants nothing more than to be a STAR with a capital S! She will do anything to climb to the top even if that means using her BFF Emme in the process.

Ethan is part of a band called Teenage Kicks and his teammates are Emme, Jack, and Ben.  He also is a songwriter and singer.  Ethan's one flaw is not speaking what he feels in his heart.

Carter is a child star and best known for his role is the movie Kavalier Kids. He is currently dating Sophie and is keeping a secret. He loves art and painting.

They are have one thing is common. They go to an elite school called New York High School for the Creative and Preforming Arts. Each on them are on a separate journey to find their way in the world.

Take a Bow is full of physical and emotional trials and tribulations. I love that each character grew and learned from events that took pace in the story. They helped each other to find happiness, to take chances and even stand up for what they believe in. Elizabeth's writing is smooth, and rich with emotion. I dare say take a bow was one of the best young adult contemporary I have read this year. This is my first book read by the author and I will be definitely read all of her work.

A 5 ★★★ masterpiece, Take a Bow is in a spotlight of it's own!

Author Lori Culwell talks about "Authors & Negitive Reviews!"+ DOUBLE Giveaway!

Hello everyone & Happy weekend! So as promised I am here today to bring my readers a awesome and quite informative post from Author Lori Culwell. She is the author of such books as The Dirt and Hollywood Car Wash. Both books are published with Simon & Schuster and Booktrope. I have had the pleasure to read The Dirt and loved it!

As most of you know things have gotten pretty heated up with authors and book bloggers alike in the topic of a "Negative or Bad" review. I myself try hard not to get involved by these occurrences but often wonder what different authors opinions are on this topic. So I have asked the lovely Lori Culwell to write about what she thinks and feels about the drama.

Here is what she has to say....

What Can You Do About the Bad Review?
by Lori Curwell

I don’t mean to be the “total buzzkill” guest blogger, but I have sad news for you,
aspiring writers: somehow, someday, someone is not going to love your work.
Sometime after you put out your book (even if that book comes out through a major
publisher), someone is going to write a bad review about something that you wrote.

I challenged a bad review once and only once, on the grounds that the review said
IN THE REVIEW that he knew nothing about/ never read the genre in which I
was writing, and that he probably shouldn’t be reviewing it anyway. I can take a
negative opinion, but a negative UNINFORMED opinion just seems silly. It did take
a lot of back and forth, but eventually that person took down their review.

It’s happened again since then, and I have to say, now I don’t even read the bad ones,
because I know they are part of life as a writer. I accept that there are people in the
world who just don’t like my writing. I’m lucky enough to say that I get paid money
to write books, and with that privilege come challenges. Sometimes I can’t find
the right publisher for whatever book I’m working on at the moment. Sometimes
a book sells less than I would want. Sometimes people just don’t like me OR my
writing. That’s part of the job.

If you read the book “Turning Pro,” by Steven Pressfield, getting serious about your
work really makes sense. Really, you are writing for yourself. If you happen to get
paid for this work, you should consider yourself even luckier.

I’m not even one of those “glass half full” people, honestly, but over the years, I have
found that the occasional bad review is well worth the privilege of publishing. Just
my opinion, of course.

My advice: don’t argue with the bad reviews. Consider them a badge of honor.

Wow, this is some awesome stuff! Very honest and thought provoking.

Thank you Lori!!
I hope everyone enjoyed Lori's guest post. I know I did. :) So Lori being the awesome gal she is has offered my readers SIGNED copies of BOTH of her books (paperbacks).
WOOT! How cool is that?
One lucky reader will take all. Until I talk with Lori the giveaway will be open to US only but may change, so check back.

Theme Thursday [HAIR] #13

Theme Thursdays is a fun weekly event that will be open from one Thursday to the next. Anyone can participate in it. The rules are simple:

  • A theme will be posted each week (on Thursdays)
  • Select a conversation/snippet/sentence from the current book you are reading
  • Mention the author and the title of the book along with your post
  • It is important that the theme is conveyed in the sentence (you don’t necessarily need to have the word)
Ex: If the theme is KISS; your sentence can have “They kissed so gently” or “Their lips touched each other” or “The smooch was so passionate”
This will give us a wonderful opportunity to explore and understand different writing styles and descriptive approaches adopted by authors. Theme Thursdays is hosted by Kavyen @Reading Between Pages.

This weeks theme is - HAIRMane, Curls, Locks etc

My THURSDAY THEME for HAIR comes from here:

She blows out her hair and uses her fat curling iron to give the ends a little bounce, like Briget had done for her and Lisa at the beach.

What is your theme Thursday sentence this week? (leave link)
Does your current read have the word HAIR in it?
