Alexa Costa has a life-altering secret…only she doesn’t know it yet.

Confined by law to the kingdom of Alvair until the age of eighteen, Alexa Costa has lived a sheltered existence under the watchful eye of her sword-wielding guardian, Ivy. Her love interest, Caleb Whitman, is exactly the opposite. A merchant sailor and seeker of rare artifacts, Caleb has lived a life of adventure in nearby San Lucero, the long-time rival of Alvair.

After her eighteenth birthday, Alexa’s quiet existence becomes tumultuous, and she realizes she does not need to seek to find adventure. Myths become real, legend becomes fact, and Alexa discovers that she possesses rare abilities which make her a target for both sides in a centuries-old struggle for power. She must use every resource available to her—including her talents with the supernatural Amulets— to help her friends, rekindle her romance with Caleb, and save her island home from destruction.

Caleb gently took her arm, pulled her into an embrace and kissed her. In spite of her fear at being caught Alexa held onto him tightly, not wanting to let him go.
It wasn’t until footsteps sounded in the hall that she hastily disengaged herself from him, her heart leaping into her throat. He climbed through the window onto the trellis and kissed her again, evidently unable to break the seemingly magnetic connection between them. Alexa hastily broke away from him, seeing his amused grin, and ducked out from under the window. She straightened up and fixed an innocent expression on her face just as Ivy strode into her room.
“Where were you? I was worried sick!”
“I was with Novella. I must have lost track of the time,” Alexa said in what she hoped was an offhand tone of voice.
“Don’t lie to me. You were with him, weren’t you?”
“He has a name. And no. He’s out of town on business.”
She was surprised at how easily the lie rolled off her tongue, especially since she had never been able to lie to Ivy before.
Her eyes sharp as they scanned the room, Ivy asked in a carefully controlled voice, “What did you do?”
Alexa asked blankly, “What do you mean?”
“You look guilty,” Ivy said, her voice heavy with suspicion.
“I came home late. Of course I look guilty,” Alexa pointed out, wanting her to leave.
“I’m keeping my eye on you,” Ivy stated dangerously, “so don’t try anything.”
Without another word, she swept into the narrow hall and pulled the door shut with a firm snap. As soon as she left, Caleb climbed back over the windowsill.
With an amused look toward the door, he said, “Is she always like that? I thought I just kept catching her on a bad day.”
“Ivy’s always been a bit overprotective,” Alexa pointed out unnecessarily.
“So I’ve noticed.”
He brushed his mouth against hers and every other thought was driven from Alexa’s mind when he took her waist and pulled her closer to him. Then she became aware of Ivy’s footsteps downstairs and reluctantly pulled away.
“You should go,” she told him in a whisper. “Ivy is angry enough as it is. If she sees you in my bedroom, she’ll kill us both.”
She took his arm and led him back toward the window but stopped dead when she became aware of a low hissing sound. She could hear it, plain as day, beneath the wind that whispered through the ivy outside her window.
“What is that?”
“What is what?” Caleb reciprocated.
Startled, Alexa realized that beneath the hissing were what sounded like hundreds of murmurs and whispers. They reached her ears as though carried on the breeze, but the sound of them was not coming from outside.
“It’s coming from in here,” she observed quietly.
Caleb followed her gaze around her room. “What is?”
Alexa frowned at him. “Can’t you hear it?”
“I don’t hear anything,” he stated inconsequentially.
It wasn’t until she walked in a full circle around her room that Alexa thought to check within the satchel she was still wearing. Peering inside of it, she realized with a start that the noise seemed to be coming from her mother’s necklace.
“Alexa? Are you alright?” Caleb inquired softly as she took the sapphire in her hand and examined it.
The whispering stopped abruptly as she was jolted out of her reverie. She looked over her shoulder at him and hastily placed the necklace back into the satchel.
“Yes,” she replied with a forced smile as she turned back around. “I’m just tired. That’s all.” As she said it, she tried to convince herself as well as him that her mind was playing tricks on her.
Caleb said gently, “I suppose I should go so you can get some rest.”
Alexa nodded, confused by what she thought she had heard. Caleb pressed his lips briefly to hers and she smiled at him as he disappeared through the window. She listened to the rustling of ivy leaves as he descended the trellis, and then to the sound of retreating hooves as he rode back toward San Lucero on his mustang.
Suddenly realizing just how tired she really was, Alexa set aside her satchel and changed into her nightgown. Readying herself for bed, she decided not to dwell on the proclamation or the strange hissing. She was sure there was a rational explanation for it, and did not want anything to compromise her feeling of contentment.
Immersing herself in pleasant memories from the best birthday she had ever had, she climbed into bed and pulled her sheet around herself. As a light breeze wended its way through her open window and lulled her to sleep, her thoughts drifted away from her mother’s necklace, which remained silent the rest of the night.
