Supernatural meets The Da Vinci Code in this action-packed paranormal thriller, the first book in a new series from New York Times bestselling author Kami Garcia.

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

Unbreakable is like nothing I have ever read. This highly fast-paced, gripping tale keep me flipping it's pages long into the night. I am a huge fan of scary books, I crave them, wishing there would be more of them set in a YA setting. I went into reading Unbreakable with very high expectations. I mean this is Kami Garcia were talking about, author of the Beautiful creatures series. So make no mistake when I tell you I was not disappointed to say the least. More like blown away by the AWESOMENESS that is Unbreakable.

As the story begins we meet our heroine, Kennedy Waters. Kennedy is super smart. She has always been able to remember everything she sees, a photographic memory. After a movie night with her Elle, Kennedy comes home to find her Mother dead in her bed. Her cat, Elvis lying on top of her Mother's body. The police claim she had a heart attack but soon Kennedy is about to find out that is not the case. While deeply saddened by the sudden lose of her Mother, Kennedy decides to move into a boarding school, far away from her family's home as possible. But something is about to change all of that and more so her entire life is about to be turned upside down. While sleeping in her bed she is awakened by a sudden pressure bearing down on her chest. When she opens her eyes, she find her cat Elvis trying to steal her breath, or more precisely her soul. From out of nowhere, two young boys around her age bust through the door and shoot Elvis with a gun, making him flee. A very scared, Kennedy is about to meet the boys who saved her life, twins Jared, and Lukas. First her Mother dies suddenly, then she is almost killed herself. Nothing is making sense, but when she finds out her Mother's death was not in fact a heart attack but a murder by a vengeful ghost, her whole world and everything in it is about to change.

A small group called Legion has been sent to protect mankind by eliminating a very evil demon who has been freed many years ago. This demon has the power to send ghost's to do his bidding and has kill all of the members of the Legion, Kennedy's Mom included. Now Kennedy must learn to accept her birthright and take her rightful place as a new member of this group.

This spine tingling creepy tale had me reading long past my bedtime. I was totally hooked from page 1. There is something so fun, and entertaining about the supernatural. Growing up I hated scary movies and books. I would close my eyes "sometimes peaking" when ever my Dad would watch movies, like the Exorcist or The Shining.  Now all grown up, I adore those types of movies, and books. I love being scared, it's such a rush. This book totally did that for me. I was mesmerised by the story. There was never a dull moment. Unbreakable was action packed, and thoroughly creeped me out with each page. The storyline itself, the race to save the world from utter disaster, I feel is what really make this book such a great read. One other aspect of the story I loved was the building romance between Kennedy and the twins. Yes, I know what your thinking...another love triangle. Ugh!  While, I myself hate love triangles (of course it depends on the book) between the characters for some reason this one worked.  For me it just so happen to fit into the story-line perfectly. I found myself actually rooting for one of the twins over the other.

All in all, Unbreakable truly did live up to my high expectations. I think the only thing that kind of bugged me while reading was the plain disregarded of leaving her friend, Elle in the dark. I feel Kennedy could have made it a point to call her friend, and more so her aunt to let them know she was okay, even if she couldn't truly explain what was happening.

There's no doubt about it, Unbreakable was one high addictive epic read! Perfect for Halloween or for those who love a good scare. Author, Kami Garcia is a born storytelling, she really knows how to spook her readers. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

4.5
Totally EPIC! One of the best books I have read. A MUST read!!
