- A deadly virus and an impossible discovery unite in one enthralling can’t-miss read... -
Sixteen-year-old Mia Kish has always been afraid of the dark. After all, she’s baby Mia, the one who fell down a well. That was years ago, though the darkness still haunts her. But when her classmates and teachers at ritzy Westbrook Academy start dying of old age from a bizarre and frightening virus that ages its victims years in a matter of hours, Mia becomes haunted by a lot more than the dark. Their deaths are gruesome and Mia worries she and her friends may be next. In order to survive, Mia and her small crew must break quarantine and outrun armed soldiers in hazmat suits who shoot first and ask questions later. And there’s only one place to go—the Cave, aka Fenton Electronics. Mia knows it’s somehow connected and hopes her dad, Director of Fenton Electronics, who has always been strangely secretive about his work, has the answers she needs, and more importantly a cure to save everyone before the whole town succumbs to the mysterious virus. Unfortunately, it’s not answers Mia discovers, but something far more treacherous and impossible than even the virus itself. A high-stakes, fast-paced adventure with imagination and heart.
Hi Seth! Thanks for being here. :) Let's get started...
Beckie, hi! Thanks so much for taking the time to come up with these questions, and for lending your voice. I really appreciate it.
1. Tell me a little about yourself? Hobbies? Unique Talents? :)
First of all, thanks to everyone for reading, and to Beckie for hosting. I really appreciate the time and space for this! How fun! As to me: I'm born and raised in West Texas, lived abroad a couple years, and now have settled in the NYC zone for the past 8 years, where I'm married and, gasp, have two cats (they help me write). I love to play soccer, and collect autographed books from writers I love. I guess I used to collect a lot of things, but have finally reined that in, whew. Unique talents, though - all weird things. Like, I can put my entire fist in my mouth. Does that count as a 'talent'?
2. What inspired you to write your first book?
To be honest, The Well's End is my first YA book, but not my first book. I wrote three (agh!) books before this. One for my college thesis, a historical fiction set in France. One, a collection of short stories that were sort of silly. And finally, a thriller that took itself too seriously. I was exhausted from having written these and them not working, but with the 3rd book, I found my agent (the wonderful Kirby Kim of WME) and he called me into his office and said he thought I'd write YA well. As a literary agent myself, I work in YA and knew the world, but never really considered delving into it until then. But man, it was fun. We brainstormed some ideas, mostly based on major events in my life (like Baby Jessica's well-fall) and then, bam, the book happened!
3. Where did the idea for your book, The Well's End come from?
Oops, sort of answered some of this in question 2! Aside from Baby Jessica, I was really interested in viruses and poisons and the people that protect us from them. My third (and failed) book had much to do with poisons, so I had done tons of research, and that was very fresh in my mind. That said, the setting of an elite prep school, where everyone had a talent and there was a clear division between townies and richies, that felt like an amalgamation of my life in highschool, college, and then
4. Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
Oops, I answered some of this as well! Mia Kish, the main character, is a nationally ranked swimmer, and I interviewed my friend Matt Block about him being one in college and what it was like. I learned so much about the sport I never knew - so very fascinating.
5. Is there anything that you would like to say to your upcoming readers and fans?
I certainly hope they become fans. I'd say that I love to interact with readers and writers. Since I'm a literary agent by trade, I would be more than happy to help and answer questions about the process from both sides. That said, I really hope they like. If there are any fun ideas of things you want me to do with the story, I'd love to come up with a way to follow thru!
