Cover Reveal: Forty Nights (Neima's Ark #2) by Stephanie Parent

Hey gang! Today I have the pleasure of being one of the first book blogs to share a BRAND NEW cover reveal for the book Forty Nights by Stephanie Parent. I must say this cover is simply breathtaking!

Here is comes....

TADA!

Forty Nights (Neima's Ark #2)
Release Date: September 2013
Cover Designed by:
Najla Qamber Designs

Summary from Goodreads:
Neima, her family, and her grandfather Noah have found themselves trapped aboard an ark as a great flood destroys all life in the world. As their time aboard the ark lengthens, food begins to run out, wild animals grow restless, and family tensions become as much of a threat as the flood outside. In the second and final installment of Neima’s Ark, the stakes are higher, the conflicts are greater, and Neima finds herself facing a choice as impossible as the destruction all around her.

Forty Nights is a continuation of the story begun in Forty Days, and it’s recommended that you read Forty Days first for the best experience. Forty Nights does, however, contain a character guide to refresh readers’ memories. The Neima’s Ark series is a historical, feminist reimagining of the story of Noah’s Ark rather than a religiously oriented one, and the novels are best suited for readers who are comfortable with new interpretations of biblical stories.

Hi everyone! I have some awesome news! I have a new guest reviewer here at Bittersweet Enchantment. Her name is Hillary and she is awesome! (hehe) I really think you guys will enjoy her reviews. They are very well thought out and beautifully written.

WELCOME Hillary!

Title: The Madman's Daughter
Series: The Madman's Daughter #1
Author: Megan Shepherd
Published: January 29th 2013 by Balzer + Bray
Hardcover, 432 pages
Genre: Historical Fiction > Thriller
Reading Level: Young Adult

Sixteen year old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father’s gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work in a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.
Accompanied by her father’s handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father’s madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island’s inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father’s dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it’s too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father’s genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H.G. Wells’s classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman’s Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we’ll do anything to know and the truths we’ll go to any lengths to protect.

I’ve procrastinated writing this review for almost three whole days only because I had to process what my exact thoughts were about this book. And guess what? I still don’t have a clear idea of what I think. The book just left me speechless (in a good way).
I got this book a week ago in the mail, the day it literally was released in stores and the day of my mom’s birthday. I was waiting for this book for a few days because I’d been chosen by the girls (Aubrey & Margot) at Epic Reads during #TeaTime. I knew I wanted to win the book, but I didn’t know why. I’ve never read a historical fiction book before, or maybe I did but it must have been during a time at school, although this book was very different. If anything, this book convinced me it was more YA fiction than historical. And that’s what really caught my attention.
Now for the book, there were times I found it hard to relate a lot with Juliet but that doesn’t mean I DIDN’T relate to her because I very much did. She’s vulnerable, insistent, stubborn, and very intuitive. There are times when I find myself being all of those characteristics. And also the two hotties, Montgomery and Edward, I didn’t know who to like the most. Though I have to say, if you’ve read the book already the ending totally killed my feelings for Montgomery. I hope he redeems himself in the next book because I’m finding it hard to forgive him at all currently. I also hope Edward comes back in the next book or I’m going to be totally heart broken. I don’t even mind that he’s different from all of the characters. I think he was pretty noble (even if there was a dark side to him).
I also am so relieved the madman Dr. Moreau is no more because I was very appalled at all the things he’d been doing on his island. Unless someone out there thinks he might have made it out alive and will make another appearance in the next book? I really hope he doesn’t. Montgomery is kind of the next Dr. Moreau anyways; at least that’s what I think. I know there’s something coming in the next book but it’s really hard to decipher what it is. And that is why I CAN’T wait for the next book to be released! But wow! It’s going to take a whole year!
Thank you Epic Reads for gifting me this amazing book! It was something new and interesting and I could not take my mind off its plot for days. Even after I finished reading this book my mind would stray at night (before drifting off to the dream world) at everything that happened in the book. It was that good. So if you haven’t read it yet, well I think you should. Why not give Megan Shepherd, who is also first time author with The Madman’s Daughter, a chance? I think you’ll find this book very intriguing. And maybe even a little disturbing, but once you move past that you’ll actually stay awake in the early hours of morning, reading on until your eyes can’t stay open anymore.

Totally Awesome! I loved it, would read again.

I was trying to think of a surefire way to kill David Morrow, but Virginia’s constant chatter kept disrupting my thoughts.
“I don’t think you should worry about David. He was a total loser,” Virginia said. “You could do so much better.”
“You’re just saying that,” I told her. “Face it, I’m going to be alone for the rest of my life. Guys want girls who are attractive and popular. They don’t want someone who looks like me.”
“Oh, please, what’s bringing this on? David was nobody, and if a guy only cares about looks, who needs him? Trust me, there are lots of great guys out there who’ll fall for a girl who’s intelligent and funny like you. You don’t need bland David. You need someone who’s so passionate that he lights you on fire.”
“Why don’t I just get some kerosene and a match, and then I can do it myself?”
“Don’t be bitter,” Virginia said as we reached the front door of my house. “Today’s your birthday. We should go out and do something wild.”
Instantly, I became nervous. Whenever Virginia said the word wild in that Spanish accent of hers, I either ended up in a lot of trouble or in a lot of pain. When we were really wild, I ended up in both.
“I don’t think we should do anything of the sort,” I said as I fumbled in my purse for the key.
“No, I definitely think we should go to the salon in the mall and dye our hair pink. Ooohh, oooh,” she said, jumping up and down like she needed to find a ladies’ room fast, “or blue! I could totally see you with blue hair. We don’t have to get it professionally done. We can do it ourselves.”
I looked at her in amazement. She was completely serious. “Do you remember the perm you gave me? My hair is only now growing back.” I found my key and pushed it into the lock. “In fact, it shrinks a little every time you come near it.”
Virginia waved her hand airily, as though what I said was trivial. “You can’t let little things set you back or you’ll end up like...” she leaned over to whisper the last two words as we entered my house, “your father.”
I shook my head. There he was on the couch.
“I’m surprised to find you here, Mr. Smith,” Virginia said cheerfully. She had an amazing talent for keeping the sarcasm out of her voice.
“Hello, Ms. Castellanos,” my dad said. He didn’t bother to take his eyes off the television.
“Anything interesting on?” She derived perverse pleasure from needling my dad. In the beginning he used to get annoyed, but he’s learned to tune her out. Most of the time, anyway.
“You’re not watching this tired old show, are you?” she continued, pointing to the television. “I’ll save you the trouble--he dies in the end.” The vein in my father’s neck bulged, and his jaw clenched. Score, Virginia.
As my father grumpily changed the channel, she said, “Oh, I love this show, I’ve seen every episode a million times. Maybe I’ll come back down in a bit and watch some of it with you.” The muscle in Dad’s neck twitched again. Virginia grinned her sadist’s grin, heading up the stairs with a spring in her step.
“Bye, Dad,” I said, trying to keep from laughing.
“Bye, Hyalee,” he sighed, changing the channel to the local news.
By the time I got upstairs, the door to my room was already open and Virginia was rummaging through my closet.
“What’re you doing?” I threw myself down on the bed. Kicking off my shoes, I picked up the latest issue of People from my nightstand and flipped through it.
“I’m looking for something you can wear with our new blue hair, but you have less selection than a nun. Just like your mom. Soon you’ll be wearing turtle necks on burning hot days.”
My parents had a turtleneck for every occasion--turtleneck evening wear to turtleneck pajamas. Mom never went swimming, but if she did, I was sure she could find a turtleneck bathing suit.
“I’m not dyeing my hair. My mom would flip.” Why would I want blue hair anyway?
“On the bright side, your dad would only notice if you stood in front of the TV,” she said, holding up a green and blue hoodie to her body before chucking it on the closet floor.
I rolled my eyes. “Yes, but my mom would see it. She notices everything.”
“Come on, it’s your birthday! Your mom should remember how much birthdays meant to her when she was our age. Hers is in what, two days? I’m sure even she’s going to let loose a little. Besides, you only turn seventeen once, and it is senior year. The whole occasion practically screams blue hair.”
“That might make sense in your convoluted little mind, but if I cross my mom, the only screaming will come from me.”
Virginia pouted. I hated that look, but I wasn’t going to get dumped and get grounded on my birthday.      “Okay, maybe I’ll go to the store and watch you and maybe... I’ll try on a blue wig,” I said, biting my fingernail.
“Fair enough. If we’re lucky, they’ll have a sale and you can get an outfit to match your wig.”
I snorted. “You know that’s not going to happen. I have the worst luck.” I pulled on my shoes and grabbed my Dallas Cowboys hat from the floor, placing it on my head.
“We all make our own luck,” Virginia said confidently, shimmying in front of the mirror. She glanced at me out of the corner of her eye. “But if I did believe in luck, I definitely wouldn’t want yours.”
“Thanks,” I said as we headed out the door. “Thanks a lot.”

Folami and Abeni Morris are a sister-sister writing team. Together they wrote (and rewrote) The Exemeus, somehow managing to accomplish it without murdering one another. Despite their facial similarities, tendency to finish each other’s thoughts and stick up for each other constantly, no, they’re not twins and thus deserve their own individual bio.

 Folami Morris:

Folami grew up in the tiny city of San Mateo Ca, where nothing ever happens and no one ever leaves. She went to Xavier University for undergraduate, getting her B.A in physics and her B.S in Biology. After graduation she returned to California, to live in an even smaller city, where even less happens, Antioch Ca. During this time she escaped the monotony by hanging out with her imaginary friends Hyalee and Dephon, and by writing the Exemeus. She finally escaped to Queens NY and now realizes that quiet and tiny aren’t so bad.

Abeni Morris:

As luck (and logic) would have it, Abeni grew up in the same tiny little town as her sister, then she too escaped to the tinier town of Antioch. She has yet to leave. She received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood development from Cal State East Bay. She is the mom of two amazing kids, who swear that they deserve a percentage of the book proceeds and a ton of the credit. At least she raised dreamers.

Unbreakable by Kami Garcia | US or UK Cover?!

Author Kami Garcia recently posted on her blog the UK book cover reveal for her upcoming release, Unbreakable.
Have you heard of this book? It sounds so amazing! I can't wait to read my ARC.

Today I want YOUR opinion on what cover YOU like the most? US or UK? Hmmm...*ponders*

US Book Cover:

VS.

UK Book Cover

To be totally honest I prefer the US cover. It's more eye-catching, a better blend of colors, and gives the book a much more dark and menacing feel to it. Even my ARC "feels" great (yes, I said feels - LOL). It has that silky soft texture to it, and while I don't know it that feature will remain, it does make the book so much more attractive to me.

Now for the UK cover, I was not to thrilled by it. A girl standing staring at you on a good cover is often overused and for me does not make the cover standout. The colors used are somewhat similar to the UK cover but more in a yellow hue. ( ugh, I hate the color yellow - :-P ) The font used is probably the covers best feature as well as the leafy swirls shown in the background. So yes, the UK cover is in fact very pretty but the US cover I find is better fit for me.

How about you? What's you opinion? US or UK?
I would love to hear your thoughts on the covers!

Comment below. ;) Happy Reading!

Author Interview w/ Chelsea Pitcher!

Hey everyone. Happy Weekend!

Today I have the pleasure to once again work with the amazing author, Chelsea Pitcher. She is the author of the newly released novel, The S-WordHer book is by far one of my favorite reads this year. It's such a beautifully raw and emotional novel that will captivate it's readers long after the final page.
To read my review for the S-Word - CLICK HERE.

I will be sharing with my readers an author interview I did with Chelsea and additional info about her book. I truly hope everyone will enjoy this post.

Welcome Chelsea!

About The Author: Chelsea Pitcher

Find Chelsea @

Chelsea Pitcher is a native of Portland, OR where she received her BA in English Literature. Fascinated by all things literary, she began gobbling up stories as soon as she could read, and especially enjoys delving into the darker places to see if she can draw out some light.

1. Tell me a little about yourself? What do you like to do for fun? Any hobbies?

I suppose saying, “I like to read and write for fun!” would be pretty obvious, wouldn’t it? But honestly, I do really love those things. I also love going to the park or the beach (especially if I can swim!) camping, hanging out with friends, and singing karaoke.

2. Where did the idea for your novel, The S-Word come about?

I found myself really strongly affected by all the stories of bullying and suicide in the news, and I wanted to know what was going on in the minds of the teens experiencing these things. So through Lizzie, I was able to explore the feelings of a teen being bullied severely. And through Angie, I was able to interrogate the bullies who went after her best friend. In the end, I came away with a much greater understanding of both bully and bullied, and I’ve heard the same from my readers, which is amazing.

3. The S-Word deals with many sensitive subjects. Is there any place in the book that was most difficult to write about?

I think people would be surprised by which sections were the hardest to write. Certain passages dealing with bullying and abuse were actually cathartic to write, because I was letting all those ideas out, after holding them in for a long time. So while it wasn’t necessarily easy to write, say, one specific entry from Lizzie’s diary, the story flowed easily, and I felt better after I’d gotten it down on the page.

4. Have you yourself learned anything from this process of writing a book or trying to find a publisher?

I have learned an infinite amount of things! Okay, maybe not infinite, but I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned to keep trying, because giving up is the one sure-fire way you won’t succeed. I’ve learned how to search for agents, which imprints publish which kinds of books, and that editors are truly awesome (like Adam and Julia at Gallery Books, who are some of the coolest cats around.) I’ve learned that patience is more than just a virtue—it’s a necessity. Most books take 1 to 2 years to come out. But I’ve also learned you can fill up that time with editing, writing, blogging, and all manner of promotion. The trick to staying sane? Keep busy.

5. What are a few of your writing habits? Is there anything you need especially while writing?

Caffeine! Seriously, that’s really the one thing I rely on to write. That and some semblance of quiet. I’m actually pretty sensitive to noise, so if people are bustling around me, I’m probably not getting much work done. Ideally, the perfect writing space would be a quiet park with a big comfy chair in the middle, next to an iced caramel latte. I haven’t actually found this place yet (apparently, people don’t put big comfy chairs in parks?) but I will.

6. Do you have a favorite author or an author who inspires you?

I’m a huge, massive, fan-girly fan of Libba Bray, who wrote A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY, BEAUTY QUEENS, GOING BOVINE and THE DIVINERS. I haven’t even finished THE DIVINERS yet (it’s a really big book, you guys) but I know that I’ll love what she writes, because she’s an incredibly intelligent, insightful person, and her stories always surprise me. I think that’s what I look for in an author more than anything—not someone who can make me laugh, or cry, or even fall in love with a character, but someone who can truly show me something I haven’t expected. Turn a convention on its head, show me a perspective I’ve never considered before. Those are the writers I keep coming back to, because they change and expand my view of the world.

7. Is there thing you wish you could go back and do or change in your book?

I think every author has sections they read and think “I could’ve done this better,” but that’s only because we’re (hopefully) growing and improving with each book we write. So even though there are places I might want to alter or tweak, I’m only able to see those possible changes because I went through the whole editing process, and learned from it.

That said, I think there will always be a part of me that wishes Lizzie had a greater voice in the novel. But at the same time, that’s kind of the point. Lizzie’s suicide ripped her from the world too quickly, and many people in the story will spend their lives wishing they could’ve spoken to her one more time. So if I come away wanting the same thing, or if the reader comes away wanting it, I feel like I’ve done my job in illustrating the tragedy of Lizzie’s absence.

8. Do you have any other books in the works?

I definitely do! In fact, my next YA novel (which just sold to Flux in a two-book deal!) is about a faerie princess who infiltrates a human high school and becomes fully entangled in a mortal boy’s world. It’s called IMMORTAL SACRIFICE, and it comes out next fall!

9. What is your current read?

Right now I’m reading Dot Hutchison’s A WOUNDED NAME, which is a modern-day YA retelling of HAMLET from Ophelia’s perspective. The writing is gorgeous, and I’m really enjoying seeing this classic story through Ophelia’s eyes. It’s just brilliant!

10. Thank you for being here today, Chelsea. Do you have any final thoughts for my readers?

I just want to say thank you to everyone who’s reading this interview, and to everyone who’s reading and talking about THE S-WORD. It’s because of you that I’m able to do something I absolutely love, and I’m incredibly grateful!

Thanks so much for having me!

Your so very welcome! Thank YOU for being here and chatting with me. I can't wait to read IMMORTAL SACRIFICE! It sounds EPIC!!

First it was SLUT scribbled all over Lizzie Hart’s locker.

But one week after Lizzie kills herself, SUICIDE SLUT replaces it—in Lizzie's looping scrawl.

Lizzie’s reputation is destroyed when she's caught in bed with her best friend’s boyfriend on prom night. With the whole school turned against her, and Angie not speaking to her, Lizzie takes her own life. But someone isn’t letting her go quietly. As graffiti and photocopies of Lizzie’s diary plaster the school, Angie begins a relentless investigation into who, exactly, made Lizzie feel she didn’t deserve to keep living. And while she claims she simply wants to punish Lizzie’s tormentors, Angie's own anguish over abandoning her best friend will drive her deep into the dark, twisted side of Verity High—and she might not be able to pull herself back out.

Debut author Chelsea Pitcher daringly depicts the harsh reality of modern high schools, where one bad decision can ruin a reputation, and one cruel word can ruin a life. Angie’s quest for the truth behind Lizzie’s suicide is addictive and thrilling, and her razor-sharp wit and fierce sleuthing skills makes her impossible not to root for—even when it becomes clear that both avenging Lizzie and avoiding self-destruction might not be possible.
