Recent Interview with a Pretty Witch

(w/ Alex, a character in the books)

Running late for a meeting with Alexandra Wellingway, I push open the door to the Rusty Nail, a small coffee shop with a steampunk décor. Since my last visit, the place has some new pieces in the design—a vintage electric fan, a ceramic statue of a poodle wearing goggles and an aviator hat, and a poster of the 1956 movie Forbidden Planet.  The java house serves an excellent caramel latte, something I’d planned to try.  

Alex: You-who! (She waves at me from a corner table)

Ron: You look stunning. I like the shirt. (She’s wearing a lavender colored shirt with black lace fringes and the words: “Me? Sarcastic? Never.”)

Alex: Thank you. The shirt is from my pastel Goth collection. (She waves to the barista who brings me a drink.)

Ron: You ordered me a caramel latte.  How did you know I wanted one?

Alex: I’m just a good guesser, I guess.  (She giggles.)

Ron: (I sip, and it’s really good.) You and Cavendish went to a carnival in The Fortune Teller’s Secret.  What was it like going there with him?

Alex: Sometimes he can be a fuddy-duddy.  Getting him to go on rides is hard, like tying knots in spaghetti with your tongue. (She smiles.) But that would be a talent.  I did finally get him on one called The Galaxy Smasher.  I think he had fun.  Getting him on the Ferris wheel didn’t work out--a problem with a dead body in one of the cars.

Ron: In the first book, The Witch’s Daughter, you and Cavendish dig up a dead body. Anything like that in Book 2?

Alex: (She taps her chin) Well, I don’t want to give too much away, but…maybe some digging goes on, and they may find something that once was alive. But I am not saying what. (She runs a finger across her lips like pulling a zipper.)

Ron: In Book 1, you and Cavendish get a little emotionally involved. Anything like that in the second book?

Alex: Well, I am not one to kiss and tell, but something may happen. Enough said.

Ron:  What about Jane? Does she use her talent to see the past again and help solve the murder?

Alex: Jane, as always, is extremely helpful and discovers a few clues on her own. And she has a new thing, but I’m not telling. I’ll give you a hint. Look up into the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s Jane.  (The corner of mouth turns up into a half-smile, and she sips her drink.)

Ron: Anything else you want to tell us about the book?

Alex: Hmm.  I don’t want to give too much away.  (Checks her watch.) Oh, I’m late. Got to be somewhere. (She stands.)

Ron: Please, just a tickler about The Fortune Teller’s Secret.

Alex: Okay. (Sighs.) The ending will blow you away. (She runs, stops, and throws me a kiss.) Ta-ta.

Ron D. Voigts lives in Raleigh, North Carolina and sometimes somewhere else. When back in Raleigh, he enjoys time with his family, watches old movies and shoots lots of pool. He has his own private writer’s retreat in La Vale, MD where he spends lots of time working on his next novel while enjoying the mountains and eating ice cream.

What is the scariest part of being in love?

Allison:

"What? What kind of question is that? And, sorry, but how is it any of your business? I'm not 

going to answer that." 

Author interjecting: "Allison, please. Humor them. For me?"

Allison: *Sighs* "Fine. You want to know the scariest part of being in love. Honestly? Being 

afraid I'll lose it and eat the person I'm in love with. Happy now?"

Author: "No, that's the easy answer. And I know you better than that. What's the real reason? 

Why don't you want to fall in love?"

Allison: "..."

Author: "Allison..."

Allison: "Because everyone I get close to leaves! Because I don't want to start caring for 

someone only to watch them die or stab me in the back. Because it's easier to be alone then to go through that again, and now that I'm a vampire, it's better that way. They won't betray me, and I won't tear out their throat. Everyone wins."

Author: "Do you believe Zeke would do that?"

Allison: "...No."

Author: "Why are you so afraid of falling for him?"

Allison: "Because...he deserves better. He's truly a good person, and he doesn't need to be with someone like me. I don't want to hurt him, but I'm afraid of what the monster would make me do."

Author: "But you do love him, don't you?"

Allison: "That wasn't the original question. And I think I'm done."

Julie Kagawa was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish and the odd eel.

To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dog trainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full-time.

Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks are at an all-time low. She lives with her husband, two obnoxious cats, one Australian shepherd who is too smart for his own good and the latest addition, a hyperactive Papillon puppy.

Hi Gretchen! Thanks for taking time out of your busy monster kicking schedule to be interviewed on my blog.

Me: What's it like to find out you suddenly have 2 long-lost sisters you never knew about? 

Gretchen: At first it was crazy. I didn't really know how to process it. I mean, to go from being so alone to suddenly part of a family, it was... challenging. Lucky for me my sisters are pretty tough chicks and they made sure I let them into lone wolf world.

Me: What is the most scariest or deadliest monster you have ever faced and won?

Gretchen: Definitely the manticore. I don't know if I was just distracted that day, or if it really was the toughest beast in town, but if my sisters hasn't shown up I wouldn't have won.

 Me: If you could spend one day like a "normal teenager" with no worries, no threats  and certainly no monsters, what would you do and why?

Gretchen: Are you saying I'm not normal? Hahaha! What do normal teenagers even do? Go shopping and eat stale popcorn at the movies? Do their homework? Chores? Sounds awful. I'll take my crazy life any day.

There you have it folks. Gretchen DOES NOT like going to the movies and eating stale popcorn. haha!

My Character Interview with Noah.

Q 1: Why Rose? Out of all the young Amish girls in your community, what made you fall in love with her?

In my community, there are at least two dozen girls that are close to my same age. Ever since I was

a small child they’ve been there—always looking the same way and doing the same things. Most

of them seem more like family than potential prospects. Sure, a few are pretty enough and a couple

of the Yoder girls are always smiling, but not one of them has ever caught my eye the way my new

neighbor, Rose Cameron, has. She’s spunky and smart and beautiful to boot—just the kind of girl for

me. The only problem is, she’s an outsider and it’s strictly forbidden for me to court her. I’m not even

allowed to talk to her. Maybe that’s part of the intrigue. She’s completely off-limits. But, during our

secret meetings, I’ve gotten to know her pretty well, and there’s something about her that I can’t quite

put my finger on. It’s as if she’s always been my girl…and always will be.

Q 2:  Tell me a little about being Amish. What is one of the hardest parts of living this lifestyle?

I know many outsiders mock our simple ways and our refusal to use their technology and fancy things.

But I can honestly say that I’m content with my life. Working the horses and tilling the land is in my

blood. I can’t imagine a life without early morning breakfasts and prayer around the table or a day

working with the wind on my face and the sunshine on my back. Sure the suspenders are aggravating

as all get out, and sometimes I struggle to stay awake during the three hour Sunday services, but I

reckon it’s a fair trade in the end. I wouldn’t give up my plain ways for the outsiders’ pickup trucks,

computers and movie screens. The more difficult road is the truer one for me.

Q 3:  From first glance, what was it about Rose that attracted you to her?

Rose’s bright blue eyes sparking fire at her brother got me first off. She was soaking wet and her hair

bounced down her back in a tangled mess when she scraped with Justin. Once I got past the shock

of seeing a girl in such a state, I couldn’t take my eyes off her—even with Father and Jacob standing

nearby. I’d have to say, I was smitten at first sight.

Q 4:  What is your most favorite and the worst family chore you must do?

I jump at the chance to do anything with the horses; grooming, shoeing or simply cleaning a stall is

hardly like work to me at all, but ask me to mow our two acre lawn and I’ll roll my eyes for sure.

Q 5:  If you could change one thing you did or said to Rose during your relationship, what would it be?

I would take back ever accusing Rose that she wanted to take the easy way out by remaining English.

I’ve learned a thing or two since then, but I know better now. Rose doesn’t shy away from anything,

hard work included.

Q 6:  What is your favorite fun activity to do with your family? (since computers, games and such are not allowed)

On warm summer nights, after a long day of baling hay or framing a house, we’ll all gather around

the bonfire pit in the backyard. Mother will have treats on hand, like homemade ice cream in waffle

cones or puffed sugar to roast in the flames. After we’ve filled our bellies, Mother and the girls will

begin singing. My brothers and I don’t ever join in, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t enjoy listening

to the way their voices blended together. The sound is what I imagine would come from the mouths

of angels. When their songs finally end, Father’s voice booms out in the darkness with all sorts of

interesting stories, some are made up adventures of rebellious boys and the trouble they get in, but in

the end there’s always a lesson to be learned. The smell of the wood-smoke and the laughter in the

night air always puts my spirit at peace.

Q 7:  Is there anything about Rose you wish you could change or just don't like about her?

Even though Rose is about as stubborn as a mule on a rainy day, I wouldn’t change a thing about her.

All the trouble she gives me keeps me on my toes.

Q 8:  Where do you see yourself 5 years down the road? What are your life goals?

I reckon in five years, Rose and I will have a couple of toddlers running around. Family means

everything to me and I hope to be as good a Father to my children as my own has been to me. I’ll

be a partner on the Miller construction crew and tending a large farm. In the evenings I’ll be tuckered

out from the long day of work and chores, but I’ve made a promise to Rose that I’ll make time to go

riding with her in the corn fields several evenings each week. Our lives will be filled with hard work and

sacrifice, but also a lot of laughter and love.

Q 9:  Would you ever give up being Amish for Rose? Explain your choice.

As long as Rose wants me, I won’t live without her. If I have to leave the Amish to keep her by my

side, I’d do it, but my hope is that she’ll choose to be Amish with me.

Q 10:  When was the first moment you knew you were in love with Rose? Where were you at or what happen?

When I think back on it, the first minute I laid eyes on her, I was a goner. My senses came alive at that

moment. Colors blazed brighter, smells were sweeter and sounds sharper. I thought I was plum crazy

when my body reacted the way it did at the sight of the English girl. I had to be careful to keep it all

in so Father and Jacob wouldn’t be the wiser. For a while I tried to convince myself I wasn’t falling for

Rose, but when I was alone with her in the woods on that warm, summer night, I finally let the feelings

in…and I knew I’d found the love of my life.
