As the Locals study Hope, she studies them. She wants to believe the tall grey creatures could be peaceful, but as the simulations become more dangerous, Hope is about to become the human race’s last chance for survival.

Character Development by Marie Langager

My main character is a seventeen-year-old girl named Hope. Earth was destroyed when she was twelve. So I pictured a girl as a kid, hearing adults say strange things about bad things happening with the planet, being told that she might be departing into space. But I wanted her to still be thinking about school, normal things. Then her parents are killed and she’s left alone to fend for herself. She leaves behind her planet, friends, family, everything.

Once I knew this I had the start of my character. I wanted a girl who was incredibly sure of herself, maybe too sure. Inside she’s a little broken, plagued by doubt, but she fights it. She’s experienced things that required confidence, an unwavering belief that she’s capable, that she’s right, because she had no one else to lean on.

After Earth’s destruction, she’s lost some of the ingrained respect for authority that children normally have, and become her own advisor. Because she had to. But I wanted to give her Chief, the leader of Earth’s survivors, a grandfather type who’s also lost his family and sort of adopted Hope as his own daughter.

Hope still struggles with letting others make decisions. She does what she thinks is best. She wants to advise the Chief (the leader of Earth’s survivors). He listens to her when he hears something he thinks is sound, because Hope has a different way of thinking. Chief is inclusive of all ideas, even ideas from seventeen-year-old girls. But she doesn’t always listen to him.

With Chance, her boyfriend, Hope is still fiercely independent despite how much she loves him. There’s this line: “Somehow, I felt like he couldn’t be denied. I started feeling as though he belonged by my side.” That sums it up. She doesn’t say she wants to be by his side, but that she wants him by hers. It’s difficult for her to need others, but Chance brings out that desire to need someone. She’s accustomed to relying on herself.

Hope constantly puts herself in danger. As I was writing I wasn’t sure how much I was going to let her get away with. I also knew that feeling hope (the emotion) is a dangerous thing. So often, hopes and dreams get crushed. What we hope will happen, just doesn’t.

I developed this character who believes she’s right, who thinks she knows best, so that later experience might show her what mistakes she’s capable of making. So that she might find value in both independence and the support of others, and come to new understandings in the course of her character arc.
