Top Ten Tuesday # 20 + Teaser Tuesdays # 45

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This meme was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

This week's Top Ten is:

Top Ten Favorite Beginnings/Endings In Books

1. The Iron Queen (The Iron Fey #3) by Julie Kagawa - The ending just brought me to tears. I mean full out sobbing like a baby, box of tissues, snot and all! haha

2. Beautiful Lies by Jessica Warman - The ending of this book totally BLEW. MY. MIND!

3. Immortal City (Immortal City #1) by Scott Speer - Both beginning and the ending were spectacular! One of my favorite books last year.

4. Slide (Slide #1) by Jill Hathaway - Mostly the ending but the beginning was amazing as well or as said in my review: "Slide rocked my socks off".

5. The Devouring (The Devouring #1) by Simon Holt - OMG, the ending was SO scary! I had nightmares after reading this book. The whole book was one big freak fest. Also it's one of 5 books I literally didn't put down until the very end. (even if that meant staying up to 3 am)

6. Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) by Tahereh Mafi - The beginning was totally epic! (as was the end)

7. Bad Girls Don't Die (Bad Girls Don't Die #1) by Katie Alender - Another scary book that kept me up half the night reading. The ending left me breathless.

8. The Last Academy by Anne Applegate - THE ENDING! *True story: I was sitting in a Barnes & Noble reading the last 60 pages of this book, while my best friend was sitting across from me eating. When I finally found out the why all of these odd things keep happening to Cam my mouth dropped. (literally) I mean like, OMG!!!! My friend is looking at me like "WHAT THE??!". I swear people around me are giving me a look like, is she is crazy?! *

9. Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult - The beginning. Super cute!

10. Shadowlands (Shadowlands #1) by Kate Brian -  I was like: WTF????!!!!! The ending totally blew my mind..... Nooooooo!!!  I cannot put into words the ending. *mind blown*

It was SOOO hard for me to only choose 10 books because there are so many that fall into this category for me.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

The Rules:

• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers.

My teaser comes from the book:

Star Cursed by Jessica Spotswood

Finn's mouth claims mine with a searing kiss, and my mind empties of everything except his hands, his lips, his tongue.

[...another snippet...]

There is a little cut on Rory's check from her Father's ring. I call up my magic again and touch her cheek, lightly, with my fingertips. "Hold still."

“Do you do that?” I ask.
“Do I do what?”
“Run around the forest in the middle of the night?”
The hint of surprise on her face gets covered up quickly. “I didn’t say that. No, I’m saying that I understand why some people do. The hospital emergency rooms have busy nights on a full moon because people run around in the middle of the night and bump into things. That’s what I meant. I wasn’t talking about me at all.”
“Okay.”
“I’m super serious. I just like the moon. That’s all.” Bree says, a weird nervousness coming from her that I haven’t seen before.
“So you’re only a moon enthusiast and that’s all.”
“Yes.” She giggles. “A moon enthusiast. I like that.”
Bree gulps down some water from her glass
“There’s a lot of suicides during a full moon.” The words roll off my tongue and I instantly tense up the moment my brain catches it. Suicides? Why did I bring that up? Now that doesn’t make me sound depressing to be around, does it?
The table falls silent.
My stomach burns. I’ve destroyed this date. Blew it up in my own face. Why do I keep saying stupid things? I should have printed some awesome one-liners I could say to girls and slip those into my pocket. I suck at improv.
“Even the moon can’t cure everyone’s darkness,” Bree says, her eyes searching mine.
Why is she looking at me like that? Does she suspect that I tried to — No way. How could Bree possibly know that?
“I don’t believe in all that witches and wizards stuff. I think it’s a bunch of old superstitious crap made up by people to scare other people. And to sell them Halloween junk at grocery stores.”
Bree sips more water. “You don’t believe myths could be based on the truth?”
“Nope. And I don’t believe in Bigfoot either.”
Our waiter comes over. I order Fettuccine Alfredo and salad. Bree takes more time, scanning the menu as her mouth twitches to the side.
“I’ll take the Veal Parmesan,” Bree says.
“Our chef’s signature dish. Excellent choice,” The waiter says.
“But I want it without the sauce and cheese on top.”
“Breaded veal without the Parmesan?”
“Yes. And what side dish comes with that?”
“A side order of pasta marinara with our vegetable of the day.”
Bree’s eyes wince. “I want meatballs instead.”
“Side order of spaghetti and meatballs? We can do that.” The waiter writes it down.
“No pasta. Only the meatballs. And can you leave off the veggies and just add more meatballs?”
The waiter shoots me an unhappy look. I pretend to look out the window. The man rips off an order slip, crumples it up, and starts again. “I have a breaded veal without sauce or cheese with a double order of meatballs. What dressing would you like on your salad?”
Bree bites her lip. “No dressing, but can you put an obscene amount of bacon bits on it?”
“Bacon bits instead of dressing?” The waiter looks at Bree like she’s gone insane.
“An obscene amount. Yes.”

Hi, Everyone! My name is Doug and I'm a young adult author of the new paranormal romance novel My Girlfriend Bites. Beckie was so nice to let me do a guest post on her blog. Today, I'll be interviewing Aiden Jay, one of the main characters in the novel. But first, a little background on Aiden...

Aiden is a 16 year-old-boy who wants to find the perfect girlfriend. He thought he found that in Pamela, a popular and gorgeous girl who Aiden couldn't get out of his mind. After gathering his courage, Aiden revealed his feelings to Pamela who laughed at him. This humiliation drove Aiden to commit suicide. But he somehow survived the attempt. Aiden now feels like a total loser who will never find that “dream” girl. That was until he met Bree. Aiden's best friend is Issy, a boy he's known since 7th grade when they dissected a frog together in Life Sciences class. Issy and Aiden love playing Death & Valor 4, a first-person shooter that takes up all their free time.

Let's start the interview. Welcome to the interview, Aiden!

Hey.

You mentioned to me about wanting to find the perfect girlfriend. For you, what kind of girl would that be?

I don't know. A girl that's hot. Soft. They have this, like, girl smell to them. Someone that laughs with me, not at me, you know? If she's a blonde that's a plus, but it's not necessary. A girl who's a gamer, but I don't want to date someone who's on a higher level than me on Death & Valor because that would be weird since we couldn't talk about the game because of spoilers.

In the novel, you meet Bree and the two of you become friends. Is she the perfect girl?

Um....no, she not perfect.  Bree has dark hair and she's not much of a gamer. She's more an outdoors girl and sometimes can scare me a little. Bree doesn't mean to because she's just being herself. But she can get carried away sometimes because she's...a passionate girl.

Aren't most werewolves passionate?

Oh...so you know about Bree, then?  Yeah, Bree gets passionate about a lot of things. Like, mating season is a real weird time for her.  Bree acts...really affection towards boys. I mean, inside the school cafeteria it gets embarrassing when a girl is licking your face. Kids talk about that stuff. I know Bree likes me and all, but human girls don't usually do that to their boyfriends in public.

Have you seen Bree change into a werewolf?

Yeah, it blew me away. I was so scared the first time I ran away. Wouldn't you? Your girlfriend is so cute and soft and then she turns into a monster that grows fur and fangs. Then she growls at you like you're supposed to understand her and then you wonder if she'll eat you. That's a lot of pressure for a guy in a relationship.

What does Issy think of your new girlfriend?

I think he was jealous at first. Me and him would spend so much time together after school, then suddenly, Bree is wanting me to do more and more things with her. Girls are so needy. But then Issy started to suspect that Bree wasn't who she said she was and this put me in a weird situation because I don't want to lie to my best friend. He's my wingman in life, you know? But I care about Bree and want her to stay safe. The less people know she's a werewolf, the better.

Did you meet Bree's parents? What are they like?

Weird, really weird. And scary. Well, Mrs. Mayflower is nice. But Mr. Mayflower is scary. The guy is huge. He could crush me using only one of his hands. And sometimes he acts like he wants to do that to me, too.  I had dinner with Bree's parents once. They ate raw pieces of steak, but acted like their steaks were normal. Seriously, the meat barely had a brown crust on the top and the insides were red and bloody. I almost barfed a couple times it was so gross.

What does your dad think about Bree?

Dad hasn't met her. I kinda don't want him to. Well...you see...my dad drinks a lot. Most of the time I never know what kind of condition he's in so I don't like to have anyone over. Issy's parents have been awesome about letting me hang with Issy for hours and hours. On some days I wish they could adopt me.

If there was one thing about Bree you could change, what would it be?

Hmmm. Well, like, I said before, she could be a gamer. But then if she was, Bree wouldn't be some of the other things that I like about her. Bree's made me appreciate the outdoors more. If she were a gamer, we probably would never go outside. And if Bree wasn't a werewolf, then she would be ordinary. Just another girl. Being a werewolf makes Bree different and I like that about her since I'm different, too. Guess that doesn't answer your question, does it?

You know, I wouldn't change Bree at all. She's great just the way she is.

Nicole Sobon's DREAM CAST for the characters in Program 13

Teresa Palmer as Emile Reed/Program Thirteen: She fits my image of Emile physically, and after seeing her in both I Am Number Four and Warm Bodies, I think she’d be perfect for bringing Emile to life.

Sebastian Stan as Hayden Reed: Hayden is the protective older brother, so he’s rather serious throughout most of the book, but he does have his humorous moments, and I think Sebastian Stan would be perfect as Hayden.

Logan Lerman as Colton: Colton is my favorite character (you’ll understand why in Deprogrammed). He’s definitely broken, but at the same time, he does still have this fun personality, and I think Logan Lerman would be able to capture Colton perfectly. (The Perks of Being a Wallflower is definitely proof of that.)

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Charles McVeigh: This one is tricky for me, I have this image of McVeigh in my head, and I don’t really know of any actor that really fit that image, but Nikolaj Coster-Waldau comes very close.

ARC Review: A Really Awesome Mess by Trish Cook & Brendan Halpin + Giveaway!

Title: A Really Awesome Mess
Authors: Trish Cook & Brendan Halpin
Expected publication: July 23rd 2013 by EgmontUSA
Hardcover, 288 pages
Genre: Contemporary > Coming of Age
Reading Level: Young Adult

A hint of Recovery Road, a sample of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and a cut of Juno. A Really Awesome Mess is a laugh-out-loud, gut-wrenching/heart-warming story of two teenagers struggling to find love and themselves.

Two teenagers. Two very bumpy roads taken that lead to Heartland Academy.
Justin was just having fun, but when his dad walked in on him with a girl in a very compromising position, Justin's summer took a quick turn for the worse. His parents' divorce put Justin on rocky mental ground, and after a handful of Tylenol lands him in the hospital, he has really hit rock bottom.

Emmy never felt like part of her family. She was adopted from China. Her parents and sister tower over her and look like they came out of a Ralph Lauren catalog-- and Emmy definitely doesn't. After a scandalous photo of Emmy leads to vicious rumors around school, she threatens the boy who started it all on Facebook.

Justin and Emmy arrive at Heartland Academy, a reform school that will force them to deal with their issues, damaged souls with little patience for authority. But along the way they will find a ragtag group of teens who are just as broken, stubborn, and full of sarcasm as themselves. In the end, they might even call each other friends.

This review contains Mild Spoilers.

As a avid reader I come across many wonderful books. Ones that make you think. Ones that break your heart. Ones that you will treasure forever and that you are proud to own. Only rarely you read a book that you know you will remember forever....that perfect book, a rare gem that shines among the rest.

A Really Awesome Mess is exactly that. 5 Stars for me does not cover the sheer awesomeness within these pages. Here's why...

The story is being told from dual narrators, Emmy and Justin. Both are living troubled lives.

Emmy got herself into trouble over an internet prank that some mean kids pulled on her. Of course she wanted payback but ended up getting into more trouble and evidently her family put Emmy into a mental health ward Reform School called Heartland Academy. Emmy is mad at her family at this obvious betrayal, and it doesn't help that she already feels like an outsider within her family. Why? She is adopted. Asian and looks nothing life her family, this causes her to feel out of place and sometimes unloved.

Justin, on the other hand has both parents but they are divorced and live apart. While staying at his fathers home "something" happens with a girl Justin brought back to the house. His father just so happened to walk in on Justin and this girl in the middle of a "compromising situation". Days later Justin decided to swallow a bunch of Tylenol...to kill himself...or a blatant cry for attention? Never the less he ends up in the same Reform School as Emmy

Both Justin and Emmy want nothing to do with Heartland Academy and feel they shouldn't be there. Only until they meet each other things start to change. But what happens to them both throughout the story is what makes A Really Awesome Mess....A Really Awesome Book!

Yep, this was me during and at the end of this book

There is no doubt about it, I LOVED THIS BOOK! Every. Single. Page.

Now I have never read anything by Trish Cook or Brendan Halpin but after reading A Really Awesome Mess I definitely need to and soon. I totally love when two authors join together to write a book. There are very few that do this but let me tell you both Trish Cook and Brendan Halpin writing style has the perfect blend of humor, captivating characters, a heart-wrenching story that I will never forget. One of the favorite parts of the book was seeing both Emmy and Justin grow together and separately. Although their journey was not an easy one, they both somehow found the strength to hold on to each other. Another great aspect in the story was the secondary characters who also lived at Heartland Academy. They all really added so much to the book, helping the story come alive.

Everyone NEEDS to read A Really Awesome Mess. I definitely recommend it to all readers young and old. There is no doubt in my mind that his book will move you beyond words. For me, it has already done just that and so much more. I want to thank Trish Cook Brendan Halpin for writing such a beautiful and inspiring novel that will stay with me forever.

Totally EPIC! One of the best books I have read. A MUST read!!
