Legacy of the Clockwork Key (The Secret Order #1)
by Kristin Bailey
Hardcover, 403 pages
Expected publication: March 5th 2013 by Simon Pulse
A teen girl unravels the mysteries of a secret society and their most dangerous invention in this adventure-swept romance set in Victorian London.
When a fire consumes Meg’s home, killing her parents and destroying both her fortune and her future, all she has left is the tarnished pocket watch she rescued from the ashes. But this is no ordinary timepiece. The clock turns out to be a mechanical key—a key that only Meg can use—that unlocks a series of deadly secrets and intricate clues that Meg is compelled to follow.
Meg has uncovered evidence of an elite secret society and a dangerous invention that some will stop at nothing to protect—and that Meg alone can destroy. Together with the handsome stable hand she barely knows but hopes she can trust, Meg is swept into a hidden world of deception, betrayal, and revenge. The clockwork key has unlocked her destiny in this captivating start to a trilogy.
If You're Going to Live, Live Fully
I admire people who live their lives so fully that you can't imagine even surviving a day in that person's shoes. I tip my hat to those who had passions so relentless, that they followed those passions to the ends of the Earth, and sometimes beyond. When I think of people who lived their lives fully, I think of people like Dian Fossey, John Glenn, and Annie Oakley. I like people who push boundaries and seek adventures.
I'm not quite sure I can call her my hero, but when I think about a single person from history that certainly pushed the extremes in every sense of the word and managed to shake convention at every turn, I have to admit I deeply admire Pancho Barnes.
Who is Pancho Barnes?
For a fairly good run down of her outrageous life, check out her story here. (http://forgottennewsmakers.com/2011/03/16/pancho-barnes-1901-%E2%80%93-1975-pilot-proprietor-partier/)
Pancho Barnes was born to a wealthy family in Southern California and was a wild child from day one. In an attempt to settle her down, she was pushed into marrying a pastor. That didn't work out so well. Instead she shirked what society expected of her and ended up living a life of so extreme I can barely comprehend how one person managed it all. Pancho Barnes did everything from running away from home on horseback to Tijuana, to helping to pilot a banana boat that got mixed up in running weapons during a revolution south of the border. She became one of the first accomplished female stunt pilots and broke Amelia Earnhardt's air speed record.
She also established a thriving business in the middle of the wasteland of the Mojave desert that catered to anyone who was anyone in the early days of military flight testing and the space race.
I hate that a character as rich and as wild as Pancho Barnes has been lost to obscurity, because I know that she would hate it. So here's my shout out to one heck of a woman.
I guess at heart, I love a good adventure. I love people who are bold and slightly reckless because in the moments when I'm afraid or I feel like I just don't matter, I like to be reminded that there are those who are brassy and fearless. If any two words have ever described a person, brassy and fearless certainly described Pancho Barnes.
I may not go through as many husbands as Pancho did, or curse as much, but when all is said and done, I hope I have as many stories to tell.

Kristin Bailey grew up in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley in California. As a kid she enjoyed visiting the beach, camping and skiing with her two brothers.
Now she is a military wife and mother of two young children. She is also terrible about spoiling her pets. She has one fluffy mutt, two cats who think they own the world, and a fish tank with a quartet of fat fish, and two secretive striped ninja-assassin snails. In the course of her adventures, she has worked as a zookeeper, balloon artist, and substitute teacher. Now she enjoys writing books for teens who enjoy mystery and adventure as much as she does.

Even though I'm not really into steam punk genre, this book sounds really good and I will read it if I can get it at the library (still reluctant about steam punk), but I might as well buy it.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting guest post indeed, very...unique. I love fun facts so I will add Pancho and her bio to my list.
