If You're Going to Live, Live Fully

I admire people who live their lives so fully that you can't imagine even surviving a day in that person's shoes. I tip my hat to those who had passions so relentless, that they followed those passions to the ends of the Earth, and sometimes beyond. When I think of people who lived their lives fully, I think of people like Dian Fossey, John Glenn, and Annie Oakley. I like people who push boundaries and seek adventures.

I'm not quite sure I can call her my hero, but when I think about a single person from history that certainly pushed the extremes in every sense of the word and managed to shake convention at every turn, I have to admit I deeply admire Pancho Barnes.

Who is Pancho Barnes?

Pancho Barnes was born to a wealthy family in Southern California and was a wild child from day one. In an attempt to settle her down, she was pushed into marrying a pastor.  That didn't work out so well. Instead she shirked what society expected of her and ended up living a life of so extreme I can barely comprehend how one person managed it all. Pancho Barnes did everything from running away from home on horseback to Tijuana, to helping to pilot a banana boat that got mixed up in running weapons during a revolution south of the border. She became one of the first accomplished female stunt pilots and broke Amelia Earnhardt's air speed record.

She also established a thriving business in the middle of the wasteland of the Mojave desert that catered to anyone who was anyone in the early days of military flight testing and the space race. 

I hate that a character as rich and as wild as Pancho Barnes has been lost to obscurity, because I know that she would hate it. So here's my shout out to one heck of a woman.

I guess at heart, I love a good adventure. I love people who are bold and slightly reckless because in the moments when I'm afraid or I feel like I just don't matter, I like to be reminded that there are those who are brassy and fearless. If any two words have ever described a person, brassy and fearless certainly described Pancho Barnes.

I may not go through as many husbands as Pancho did, or curse as much, but when all is said and done, I hope I have as many stories to tell.
